ha ha , don't have too be using a digger all the time too dig too dogs , for start mine wont stay that long and secondly I'm very obese , got job lift one leg in front the other , track the digger round and scrape the side back its called battering the hole back . when your laying mains in trench boxes 5 meters deep., ... you may open your eyes a bit and see such hazards , I couldn't care less really , just looked bit iffy in the photo , but hey who am I too judge photos on here , I will leave it too you experts

If your digging just 5m deep for mains there is no need to batter sides for trench box ,done miles of the fecking stuff .Shotfired liquid nitrogen too .I get what you are saying though about diggers on digs as all said and done ,the digger driver is where the buck stops should it go tits up .Commen sence ,that rarity ,should prevail .

Why would you batter the top meter back for. So lads can slip and slide trying to climb slippery batters carrying the staff.shovels etc.

Take that top meter down to level flat.so the lads working can walk round the top of the box safely.

Electric ,water and gas not main sewer or rainwater mate .We did one in RAF Colerne 8.3 m deep all lazered in but off topic i know lol.Weve also dug in running gravel at 6m where the agent hired a shot firer with liquid nitro to freeze ground .You get 2 hours in a out .

could of done with a machine on this one,side of a railway track,well over 6m on the b&f if my memory serves me right.climbing out and running for cover every time we heard a train lol,2 chipping and digging and taking it in turns to rope it out with the trusty old builders buckets.still digging until 2 am last day to a very dead dog.

you make it up as you go along , depends what site your on , some sites wont allow operatives in a trench whilst machine is digging ,............ive seen a 450 mm water main go whilst digging and if any one was in the bottom of the hole they would of drowned no if or buts , they would of never got out . but you knowing me really well and that I don't know groundworks , etc etc. a banksman is there too direct the machine operator theres is only so much you can help someone, a little bit like yourself really .

theres all different regulations for different companies and now your talking about machine accidents????

Excavating and ask the foreman what am I doing on the edge of the dig.

Batter.or benching it.he says benching.and you batter it.down the road you will be.

But at the end of the day you kill someone with a machine and you ain't followed the method statement or are found at fault.then prison it is.

My view on it from 22yrs muck shifting is.

If you think it ain't safe or he says do it like this and you dont agree. drop the bucket or blade.as the foreman knows you are going to be done not him.

Just to add a quick story.

I was working on a job about 18yrs ago just when the quick hitch came about

A digger driver and labourer had worked together for about 30 yrs.

Mainly trench work.they knew each others every move.untill the old fella put the bucket back in the trench.and the quick hitch hadn't locked the bucket.before the hitch alarms were on machines.

The bucket fell of and killed his mate.

I heard after the lad gave up machines.his head had completly gone.

Terrible accident.
