forest of dean redneck 11,722
Been ducklings on the river monnow for a week now, some got squashed by a lorry in monmouth last week.
LaraCroft 863
They got here last week - just 2 initially, but about a dozen now. After moving in here Feb 2015, and realising they nested in the extension (unfinished by previous owner and trashed over 10 years of being open to the weather, due to be removed and replaced ) I blocked off the openings, and made up for it by opening the barn and a few sheds so they can nest in there. Toad and frog spawn in the run-off ditches still, along with lots of tadpoles of various ages. Some still very small, some with back legs appearing.
neil cooney 10,416
Seen my first swallow today. And spotted these in the can today Seen the first Mallard ducklings of the year around here last week. The terriers were following the line of an otter (the heel line as I seen where he left the river and went in) and were flying but they ran straight into a duck with her clutch and I stopped them. She gathered them and went on her way. Whenever I find ducklings I try and see them regularly and count them. First it's 10, then 9, then 8 and so on. Reminds you how brutal nature can be. The ducks I seen might have a chance as I've 23 grey crows trapped on that stream in the last couple of weeks, but, that Otter is still around. A large dog judging by his prints.

neil cooney 10,416
I worked along the Grand Canal years ago and I remember watching a duck with her brood. It went from 11 to 2 and the only predator I seen was the pike. I seen no sign of mink, otter or herons. Mind you, I do know a lad who opened up a heron and found 16 ducklings in it (I seen the photo) but they're were all killed in a pen.

neil cooney 10,416
Funny we're talking about Canals in cities Peter. I seen an add this morning for a new series starting Sunday week on RTE about wildlife in Irish cities. It showed Otter, Herons and Hares in the trailer, might be worth a watch.
