Your Thourgts On Ratter\ Family Pet

Recommended Posts

I have never done any ratting so any advice is helpful what are your thoughts of having a family pet that also dose ratting and have any of you done that or is it a really bad idea and workers should not be also pets my only thought was about the risk of disease if you have had a ratter / pet what methods did you take to minimise risk of family members getting sick thanks

JMHO but working dogs make much better pets than your high maintenance, highly strung lap dogs but be very careful if you do decide to go down the route of keeping a working terrier. It can take over your whole life and become addictive, is that what you want ?

Am I the only one who things that you don't need a terrier for ratting?

I practically grew up on my aunts commercial chicken farm and they took nigh on any waif and stray and they did a job

Her best ratter ever was a springer my father bred, supposedly

Thanks for the advice guys

I think this is defiantly the way we want to go with our next dog as our last dog was a westie a family pet died at the age of 15 a couple of months ago even tho she was not a worker an just a lapdog when she was sitting next to me on the sofa I always felt sorry for her because she did not get the chance to try ratting even tho she may not of been any good she probably would of had a lot fun trying were still not to sure on what to get we will probable go for a jrt tho

I tend to go for John Frieda shampoo but its got to be the one for frizzy hair Lee

Herbal essences is well better mate doesn't leave the hair so frizzy you could just brush through with a little friz ease if your having one of those can't do anything with it types of days

Nor me. Done it back in the 70s still staying in my parents house my youngest sister used to let the wee jack Russell jump all over here before I had cleaned him up and the only thing she caught was Mad Cow's Disease. Pmsl.

would you not consider another westie? they will work aswell. I have two, the older one has calmed down now but the younger one has a huge prey drive. I have seen pics on here from a guy that works a westie aswell.

All my kids grew up with terriers and lurchers that ratted and hunted other things,i lost the odd jukel because of their hunting lifestyle,i never lost or got a kid sick living with them.

Some deal of reality is needed here surely .If a terrier has been ratting then no one in there right mind would let it lick a kid would they .Not good even if they havnt .I've only ever had one dog indoors and that was a russel x of my mums when I lived at home years ago .Incidentally ,that dog died of lepto despite puppy jabs and yearly boosters .Part of me would love a terrier indoors but seeing the state they come home in sometimes its just better to hose them ,feed them and put them in their straw beds outside .Experience tells me most working dogs would rather be out anyway ,given the choice from an early age .
