rickysdaystate 33
Hi, I want to make a knife I have had a quick look round on the net, and I like two knifes from different makers. One from Alan wood, and the other from Swc hand made knives. My question is, which is better out the two, and is there anything else to consider
jok 3,320
Do hardened steel (old) files fit the requirements? I used to use them to make turning chisels and they really hold their edge. Have a word with Gruffalo Griff on here, I'm sure he'll put you right. (I digress). I have an old file. Jok.

tilimangro 1,013
Couldn't find a price for the Alan wood knife The other ones a bit pricey but not a bad starting place
Gin 498
Alan Wood and SWC make the Ray Mears knives. I'm sure SWC sells the blades but i'd be surprised if Alan Wood sold just blades. Have a look on here http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk/acatalog/Knife_Making_Supplies.html http://www.sheffieldknives.co.uk/acatalog/Hunting-Knives.html
Gin 498
Of the two mentioned, Alan Wood is by far the better.
Gin 498
I like the 52100 bearing steel http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk/acatalog/Dorset_Woodland_Range.html
Gin 498
Hi, I want to make a knife I have had a quick look round on the net, and I like two knifes from different makers. Sent you pm
spsurfer 891
I would buy some 01 or 52100 steel and start from zero. Send the blade to someone who can make a good heat treat. This will be a knife made 100% by yourself! Regards Nicolas
GruffaloGriff 1,859
As others have said if you want to be sure what you are dealing with buy 01 or 52100 steel. For me scrap carbon steel- leaf spring, saw blades, old files are a bit random but can generally make a pretty good blade if tempered right and has the benefit of being free. My lad just made this one from land rover leaf spring. Heated 3x anti magnetic quenched in cooking oil and then bronze tempered at the cutting edge and blue at the spine. Takes a razor edge and holds it well. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/337559-one-for-the-kids/page-7 Materials all recycled so only costs were abrasives , glue and elbow grease. He even made the sheaf from mothers handbag!

Graham M 36
Have you had a look at these http://brisa.fi/enzo/enzo-fulltang-blades.html. I bought the Enzo D2 trapper and fitted it out with a brass finger guard and Lignum Vitea scales (off fleabay) Holds an incredible edge, and if you don't have the facilities to make your own they are brilliant. Or you can buy some o1 and make a copy of the Ray Mears one. Looks OK with Buffalo horn scales.
Gin 498
Good well made knives Graham M. The enzo trapper is a good general type knife, and yes holds a great edge. I also like your Ray Mears type.
