Marking!

Recommended Posts

A good marking dog is worth it's weight in gold, no matter what type of dog. They can come in all shapes and sizes and save hrs of unnecessary netting.

They are all different and mark in different ways also. Some are dead easy to read, others can take time to read.

My beddy/whip is a solid marker, no mistaking, as is my collie, the terrier however is very busy and can often miss, he marks with his head down the hole.

I've seen dogs scratching at entrance, pointing at entrance, subtle looks towards you.

Took a couple pics today while out for a wander (no ferret).

When I have them all out, they can get a bit competitive and sometimes take a step back while others work.

Please add your own pics/experiences.

Years ago didn't really need a marking dog ,the rabbit numbers were good and it was a rarity nothing being home ...now though it saves a lot of wasted time.....got a little patter dale here who does a little bit of digging at the side of the whole and if she's really fired up she,ll start ripping chunks out of it lol

Hard graft with out a dog around here and I think the ferrets get into bad habits messing about when there nothing at home. Also if you know some thing is at home its ideal for starting young ferret

He rarely digs at the hole and is pretty quiet about it as a rule

If my beddy whippet sniffs a burrow its occupied but if you blink you would miss it. Literally a couple of seconds sniffing, Its that quick the mark. Shes constantly on the move and very serious when working. I used to say good girl when i realised she was marking at first, but no point giving her praise as she doesnt listen to me or anyone else. She gets on with her job fine and dont need told.

Same here LOL,, hate ferreting without the dog,,although we been getting good numbers this winter,,some places still are not that productive,,so you need a marker,,,my border terrier,,has her head right in the hole,,,and draws in great breaths of air,,and snorts,,like a trumpet,,,

The young lurcher has two marks,,,the typical head in the hole,,then just looking at the hole,,,,her other Mark ,,is going from hole to hole,,but staying on the same warren,,

When she does the looking at one hole "Mark".... put the ferret in there cos you can garrantee its going to conect streight away
