your answer is more bigger than the question asked....lol you have just said on an open site that you ,would, have shot a protected bird out side of the given season and not say anything about it, i think the guy who started this thread went the right way in asking for advice, what's the difference between openly saying, you would, or posting, saying you did,?

I've never had cause to remove a Moorhen at all, let alone out of season.

Frankly I don't know the rules on this one, but I would expect you will need to put a good case to Natural England and hope you can get a special licence.

I really cant see moor hens being a problem on a golf course for what they eat compared to crows etc who will lift the divots looking for bugs etc under them , there more like to be a problem killing young duckling who they see as competition against there own young

Thanks for the info gent's.

I've spoken to the green keeper and told him I will be unable to dispatch them. He's fine with it.

you could always trap them and move them elsewhere, but usually if the land is attractive to them they will be replaced by others as soon as you move the resident ones, as they tend to be quite territorial

Feed them raisins for a few weeks in just the one spot at the side of the pond at the same time "in the mornings".( mean while soak a full bag of raisins with a full bottle of cheapest whiskey)

Moor Hens are notorious squabblers over food and they will wolf the raisins down.

After a few weeks of this introduce the whisky soaked raisins, they will wolf them down and get pissed. They will sit around or hide but always stay put and not move.

Pick them up, move them on to another location. A decent dog will find all the hiding hens and retrieve them to you.

Simply repeat the process, as and when required.

p.s. "I read some where" this method has been known to work with other birds too, like maybe Pheasants shall we say. :whistling::angel:
