air gun ant 1,666
Our lass bought a Renault Clio a few months back from a guy of auto trader that said he sold vans and got it in px. He said the logbook hadn't come thru yet but he's send it soon as it did, so she paid him and took the car, 4 months on and still no log book and he won't answer his phone. No log book = no tax or insurance etc so this things just sat on the drive now and I can't even scrap it without a logbook. If I ring the police will they just confiscate it? Do me for buying stolen goods? ( obviously I didn't/don't no if it actually is stolen, it's just starting to look a bit dodgy) what can I do? I did quite a bit to it after she bought it as he wasn't the most truthful when telling her the problems with it either but sold as seen and all that lol
WILF 46,811
See if he has anything else for sale, phone him from a mates phone to get a look, meet him and get your log book or your money.......simples
dark-destroyer-85 636
You should get a warning for the first ringer you buy then if it happens again they'll charge you but you'll still lose car either way

peterhunter86 8,627
If its not stolen can you not get a new one made up off the tax office
treecreeper 1,136
Are all the vin numbers there/match up? Can always text one of the things they advertise for a few quid to do a check.
walshie 2,804
Might not be stolen, but it might have 53 former keepers or have been registered as a write off. You can apply for the logbook yourself and take it from there. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration-certificate-v5c-log-book
air gun ant 1,666
Cheers I'll try text one of them things tonight and see what it says. If it's ok I'll apply for a new logbook (cheers for the Link walshie) and just sell it. If it comes back stolen do I just report it all to police and they take it away? Edited to add that she didn't get a new keepers slip either so there no proof that we actually own it!
bell 3,599
I would only involve the police as a last resort. They will make life difficult and will end up charging you storage fees if they take it away. Obviously you are aware that as soon as know or SUSPECT that an item in your posession is stolen then you commit an offence........

It's just happend to my brother he applied for v5 and got it turned out the lad was just lazy and not botherd about sending it off to him
bell 3,599
If it turns out to be nicked the rightful owners insurance company may have already paid out on it, in which case the vehicle belongs to the insurance company. They might not want it if its a shed in which case its yours or they may want to do a deal with you.........in eirther case the cops will look to put the recovery and storage charged at somebodys door. JDHUNTING 1,817
If its not registered to you never has been etc, then just wheel it round the corner
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
My advice is dont buy a car off them dodgy fuckers. Theyll reel off any excuse to sell you the car. When theres no log book alarm bells should be ringing. I've had my fingers burnt by them before, never again. Edited March 10, 2016 by Rabbit Hunter
