whats the legalities of first aid on dogs, mine had an accident last sat came back with blood running down the back legs.Straight down the vets to be shaved, hibiscrubed and stapled for £133.Got a stapler here and could of done it myself. Can you do it legaly.?can you inject your dogs with penicillian?or has a vet got to do it.?if i'm in doubt its always the vets but i could of saved £133.spent £350 this season in the vets and all i got for it was some hibiscrub and some metacam and afew staples all what i got at home.

Illegal under the animal welfare act but most do it anyway, just supposed to have vet receipts for all injuries even minor ones

its not illegal to treat your own dog ... you can be charged under the animal welfare act for unnecessary suffering due to your incompetence at treating the dog..

its rather a grey area; the legal stance is that you may carry out "minor treatments" but without a legal definition of minor treatments it is impossible to be sure what is allowed unless you want to trawl through legal documents to find past cases. DONT QUOTE ME !!! but i believe tht stitching, injections and similar are legal if you have been shown previously by a vet how to do these treatments

true, and if the injury sensitive area = chest, inside the legs the dog would need it to be numbed not just stapled vet for them jobs

Depends on the dog bird?

I know someone with a very laid back deerhound type and the owner has stapled both her inside legs and chest from bad barbed wire tears.

She doesn't flinch and lies there good as gold. So he told me anyway.

Same blokes got a wheaten/bull/collie type pup and that's a nightmare. It's a battle to cut its nails without anaesthetic. He said.

the wound was on the inside of her back legs but because she had eaten that day they said they couldn't numb it but they did staple her.

Its probably fine to do it unless it somehow goes wrong gets infected then they will point the finger even though the vet would only do same.

except the vet would be able to prescribe antibiotics

Lad i know treated a tail injury himself on one of his lurchers & it went bad got all infected. He ended up at vets & had to have end of tail amputated. He then got prosecuted as he waited too long before taking dog to vets. He's now not got any dogs after keeping/working dogs for 25+years!!!
