Gotcha...

Recommended Posts

I'd noticed some tree damage at the waterline over the last couple of weeks, which meant that a coypu was sneaking around, nibbling the willow bark. Looked like it was trying to kill this particular goat willow...

I'd seen a coypu about 6 weeks ago, and again about a month ago, but it disappeared both times when I went looking for it. I guessed it was coming under the fence briefly every day or night to feed. Finally, this morning, I spotted it having a quiet snooze on the western bank, about 100 yards from the house. Time for a stelfy stalk up the eastern bank. I found a narrow gap between the bare twigs on both side of the lake, manoeuvred the shooting sticks until I had a clear shot, at about 45 yards... and squeezed the trigger. The thwack of the Winchester Super X 40-grain subsonic hollowpoint finding its mark on the critter's skull told me that a follow-up shot wouldn't be needed.

Uploading photos here is a bit of a pain, so I've just attached some thumbnails showing the tree damage and the critter's just desserts. It weighed 6kg/13lbs, and measured 90cm nose to tail, 50cm nose to butt. For further images in glorious CoypuColour, check out my video of the hunt here: https://youtu.be/8as5yqcTYeM
