MR RABBIT 715
When I get a new pup my older dogs ain't happy..I just keep an eye on them easier for me as there indoors.. But if I see older dog going for pup for no reason I ain't slow in putting older dog straight cause I am the pack leader in house not the mutts...after a week it usually settles 2 Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,785
Lol, my advice was obviously 'tongue in cheek.' As people have said, it's more a territory/boss sort of thing. And as blackmaggie suggested, casso or skycat would talk you through it willingly I would say 1 Quote Link to post
bird 9,916
Get them out walking together on lead, up end of street or along a hedge an back, as often as possible and the more you do it the quicker it will accept the pup as a member of pack, but obviously don't leave them in kennel together Quote Link to post

Casso 1,261
If as you say the bitch defers to other dogs in other situations then there is an element of fear there not normally expressed but she feels safe enough to express it with the pup especially bed space which is a big one for dogs The issue will resolve itself in time, out together hunting will iron out the creases which static situations amplify , flow causes bonding , hanging around promotes friction The bitch responding like that is a bit like a small dog under a sofa growling with a shoe or something, it wouldn't normally act like that but when it feels safe it feels it can express what's inside , she's not going to kill the pup but I would think she submissive normally that's why you feel it's out of character for her I would be more worried about the pup having dog issues if she beats on him too much , I would try getting the pup focused on you the next few months out together , dogs don't have to get to know each other they just need to feel safe round other dogs If ya have room the pup will be ok on his own 2 Quote Link to post
jukel123 8,055
Try placing the pup in a crate within the kennel so the older dog gets used to the pup but cannot physically harm it. Quote Link to post
tb25 4,627
Mine was a really f****r when I first got my pup..all came good though..I do keep them apart when am not about though.. Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
its about territorial supremacy , a growl or a nip from the bitch will not have any long lasting effects on the pup you should introduce any new companions on neutral territory in the first instance. Once the pup submits the bitch will leave it alone. Edited March 3, 2016 by desertbred 2 Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
Got a bitch here that doesn't really tolerate pups as she has got older. She just growls at the pups when they get too close for comfort and they soon learn to keep there distance. Doesn't generally take too long for her to tolerate them but she never seems to enjoy them like the other dogs do until they get past the puppy phase, then all is good. I just manage the situation whilst the pup is young and never ha any real issues, despite all dogs sleeping together, that said I always make sure the pup has it's own sleeping area whilst very young and seperate it off at night and when Iam not around. Probably harder to manage if the pup doesn't have another dog to knock around with which is happy in its company as it will be drawn to the bitch naturally. Sure it will iron out with time and the sooner you get them out walking together the better atb Quote Link to post
