devon flighter 421
anyone had this problem with there dogs? ive got a gwp dog thats possibly got it he started to loose patches of hair just on his flank a few weeks back now ! i took him up the vets a couple of times now and they did bloods for thyroid etc and scrapes and everythings fine he had a dose of anti biotics 3 weekly doses of advocate and some other general eczema pills it improved things a bit slowly but its still no where near cleared up the vet cant tell me what it is other than eczema i feel im being stitched by the vet ,nothing has changed with his diet or bedding or anything EXCEPT i extended his run and and covered it for weather protection "which has made it darker " this all seemed to start around the shortest day which could tie in with seasonal eczema he is not bothered in the slightest about it ,no scratching,no problem touching it ,no inflammation ,nowt .just seem to be throwing cash at the vet for him to try something else ! hes on melatonin supplement now on my own doing but it seems to be taking ages to clear up its like one area clears and the hair grows back then another area starts

J Darcy 5,871
Hi, would i be correct in thinking that he isn't itching or chattering at the hair. Can I ask what food the dog is getting and what bedding he is on. Thanks.
devon flighter 421
no irritation at all even if i touch/stroke him! hes on raw food ,tripe, beef and lamb all minced and varied daily plus meaty knuckle bones off deer and the odd head for a bit of variety ,he gets this mixed meat with about 15-20% dried complete food 22% protein(which he has been on since a pup and the other dog gets the same diet) he also gets normal dog biscuits as treats ,he will not tolerate any bedding at all so his kennel is plywood ,thanks for the interest and any suggestions .vet took scrapes and combed for any foreign wildlife and nowt

I don't think it's a 'skin' issue as there is absolutely no redness, ergo, it is not mange or bedding allergy or food allergy. IMO it looks like the dog version of alopecia....(not sure if I've spelt that right!) If it were my dog I might think that some kind of slight hormone inbalance was responsible. Maybe have a look at : http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/acetyl-l-carnitine.html?ppc_img=ZPL10&gclid=CJ7TyabUossCFcsp0wodcnIPwg If it were my dog, I'd have him on this (or similar) for four weeks, just to see.

J Darcy 5,871
Maybe 2 cod liver oils tablets a day wouldn't go amiss.
devon flighter 421
bitch thanks for the input you could well have a point there ! he is getting a high protein diet and hasnt worked as much as usual this last few months ,i was talking with the wife about this today so it is probably worth cutting the protein down this time of the season as well ! thank you

chook1 184
Try kelp in his diet as well, had a bitch who suffered from seasonal alopecia never had a problem with hair loss when she was given kelp. This may interest you though, you said the only change was its now darker in the dogs run. Light responsive alopecia or seasonal flank alopecia is most often seen at this time of the year. It is not well understood but is thought to be from lack of sunlight exposure to the pineal gland. http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/seasonal-affective-disorder-can-be-culprit-canine-hair-loss

chook1 184
My old bitch never had any darkening of the skin, but every year around jan/feb she would start to loose her coat on her flanks back legs and her coat would start to thin a little, like i said never had a problem once she was on kelp.
