Nik_B 3,790
No photograph but I am very excited because I think I have seen a woodpecker today. I caught a flash of a bird that seemed to have some pink on it's back and black and white chevron on the tail/back, it was just a second or two but does this sound like a woodpecker? I also have a couple of pics of the Sandwich and Arctic terns which I'll stick up, they're not great but they definitely aren't black headed gull this time lol I seen a green woodpecker yesterday, first time for months. Cheers, D. Do the colours I describe sound anything like a Woodpecker, unfortunately it was a fleeting glance but I knew it wasn't something I have seen before. I'll keep my eyes out and camera handy! Lesser spotted woodpecker prob. Cheers, D. Well I've never seen one so I am hoping to get a picture, there are kingfishers behind the house as well but again just had a fleeting glance Thanks for the info
Nik_B 3,790
Just seen it again, this time I got a better look it is definitely a lesser/great spotted woodpecker. It appears to have a flightline through our garden, probably to next doors bird feeders, missed it with the camera again, I'll have to be quicker next time I think more likely a great since they are more common and I think it had some red at it's undertail coverts the fancy name (I just discovered from googling) for it's arse. That has seriously made my day
CRAZYHORSE 2,647
lesser spotted woodpeckers are a lot smaller, about the same size as a sparrow----greater spotted woodpeckers are similar to a starling in size.

Thanks CH they're definitely a greater spotted woodpecker then. We need to fill our bird feeders and see if we can draw them in so I can take a fuzzy pic or two
Nik_B 3,790
Can't link using dropbox anymore for some reason Think I'm not cut out for photography, they're always very slightly blurry I know they're not uncommon but the Bullfinch is still a nice looking bird

Nik_B 3,790
Is that yours Malt? There's a place that does hawking days near us, I'd love a day out to see what they do. They even do it from horse back (not for me lol) but the wife & daughter might be up for it as they both ride.
