s horsfield 7
Started hedging after doing a course a couple of yrs back.i'm struggling to find some where to get hold of the stakes in large numbers. I'm on the north Notts/ South Yorkshire border , if anyone has got some ideas. Cheers
Chicken_man 1,651
Hi mate, Can you make them yourself with the material from the hedge? Natural steaks look and blend in much better! Are you binding? You will use less steaks if you don't bind and use steaks and trugs only where needed. Post some pics when complete please. Atb
pikey boy 25
is there a woods were you can do some coppicing and get your stake and binders
terryd 8,692
yea the fella that show me as a kid to lay a hedge used to just cut the forked pegs as he went and nice job he did too
s horsfield 7
Part of the farm grows willow for the power stations , so no problem for binders. The problem is the stakes cos there is no woodland. It's coming to the end of the laying season so I haven't for the time to coppicing.
Chicken_man 1,651
Try a saw mill and get 1" x 1" tree steaks or bigger if you wish. I would say that's your best bet maybe. Atb
gnipper 6,566
What type of stake are you looking for? We buy pallets of all sizes of stakes and posts at work that we sell on with trees in smaller numbers. I can ask where they get them from?
Caravan Monster 323
If you're in a rush to get finished, I would look for sawn 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" stakes from a sawmill or timber merchant because they are likely to have them in stock. Could even mix them in with stakes cut from the hedge. If the stakes are at 18" spaces for binding, you'll need loads and it pays to cut down on waste. Another way to look at it, is to get the hedge laid and do the stakes and binders when you have them. That way, all the cutting is done before the hedge starts to produce buds. GruffaloGriff 1,859
What length do you need? I don't do hedging but plant a lot of trees and need stakes for them. If you have access to a table saw or big band-saw, i cut 3" treated fence post into quarters , giving four 1 1/2" treated posts 5' long, it is pretty cost effective. longbow 14
I used to a lot of hedging without stakes, just use lots of baling string to tie it all together in a long sausage shape, it doesn't look nearly as neat as stakes and binders but makes a passable hedge non the less. All the stumps and pleachers sprout out just same, when it greens up you wouldn't know. That said if you can get stakes use them. Keep in mind if you use willow for the stakes they are all going to grow.

I used some to make a hazel fence around the bantams at the back of my garden and some of them rooted!
jok 3,369
Well mate. It certainly wasn't hazel that regrew. Willow might be the option.
