hjckcff 1,738
i recognise that hat. . i dont see a problem with shooting it on top with an experienced shooter. i dont like terriers loose though but each to there own. i also dont like the look of that shovel. . they got the pest with no drama. so hopefully no more missing lambs for the farmer. i'm away to study the vid again to see if i can find the earth 3 Quote Link to post

morton 5,368
I for one hate bolts as well as terriers that arnt up with their fox therefore allowing that bolt .If a terrier has first contact mid tube then a bolt is sometimes unavoidable as well as a lengthy run round in a big place BUT if your dog has worked the fox for a while in a stop then it bolts ,the dog has moved off allowing the fox past .Some think its a good dog for saving the digging and allowing a bolt ,personally i think its an inferior dog but just my unassuming humble opinion as always . I find many a fox, especially around these parts, bolts before a terrier ever gets to it,some terriers thrive on these situations, another time the terrier will block the fox and then its terrier versus fox, then its shovel or dead fox,a useful fox working terrier will have the ability to draw the fox to a bolt,or finish it. 1 Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
its easy too judge standards now being the modern age , those men who couldn't use technology have probably forgotten more than the terriermen of today . too think were better this day and age would be obvious with the locator , but no locator would test any man and dog , hours spent in the field is experience in the brain 2 Quote Link to post

Could just be a regional thing mate but could you explain a terrier drawing a fox to bolt ,not familiar with that . Quote Link to post

Few modern bred terriers have the knack of baiting and drawing a fox, stand off and the fox goes backwards, bait it and antagonise it and it will be drawn towards an exit,my old Beddy bitch was a terrier that rarely failed to shift the most stubborn of fox from the most unworkable location, her granddaughter is proving to have the knack, her son and grandson kill a reluctant bolter, the son and grandson earn more respect with lads that see them work,id rather have a kennel of her grandaughter. whippet 99 2,613
the only reverse ive seen is when terrier killed it and then dragging it back Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
the only reverse ive seen is when terrier killed it and then dragging it back A terrier still as to work the face to draw, sometimes for far longer than a digging terrier needs to,plus it often needs a little more savvy to graft that way. There is a massive difference in a dog retreating and a dog that works going backwards, when it needs to. 1 Quote Link to post

Yep I know what your saying Morton my mate had a beddy dog from the Northumberland area and in his first season drew two foxes from the same earth it never made it too season two as it was run over. There was also a jack Russell in our little crew that would draw the occasional fox but these were usually near death. Sadly wee rusty was lost to ground. 1 Quote Link to post

Have i struck a nerve, you may have seen far more fox than me in a week than ive seen this season, geez thats an awful lot of fox,yet if your terriers have seen a quarter of what mine have seen id call you a bullshitter,as my son as grafted mine this time,on the whole,my experience is over more than 1 week,1 month or 1 season Einstein and experience often counts for a tad more than a sulk. The best way to stop being an "idiot" is to stop reading shite and experience it,then you can be an experienced bullshitter,id tell you what my terriers have accounted for this time but you would not believe me,and i was seldom there.
