North Briton 31
thin it out and let daylight in. one third open ground, one third half cover (shrub), one third canopy. row up all brashings on east west axis on north side of wood to keep cold winds out, this will warm up ground layer...check out Game Conservancy Woodland Management for wild life, good luck ...NB 1 Quote Link to post

The one 8,476
What type of woodland ? Quote Link to post
bedo 59
About 13 acre . Theres oak birch mostly Quote Link to post
jok 3,247
Biggish then. You mentioned feeders. Is there any point in as much as is there shooting going on around you enabling you to try bringing their birds over? Birch suggests wettish ground. Any chance of creating a flight pond therefore not only attracting wetland birds but also helping the habitat for non game species. It was a very valid point made regarding making the wood 'warm'. Any of that scrub can be bunched up and semi laid as a wind break. Pheasants love it too for nesting. Then in the greater scheme, vermin control. I imagine as you've been given the wood perhaps it's not been used for any useful purpose for a while. Must be great to be able to work from a blank canvass.jok. Quote Link to post
bedo 59
Theres no shoots nearby and the woods been left for years theres a few wild pheasnts knocking around . Weve been doing pest control on the farm for a couple of years . It is pretty wet ground maybe a pond would be something to think about in the future Quote Link to post
jok 3,247
Just a thought. Muntjac. Derbyshire is a fairly big area and we do have a large amount of deer, but, since becoming the heart of The National Forest, deer have really gone for it. My mate had one last night. Without wanting to know where you are exactly, where are you? Quote Link to post
bedo 59
Near derby . Not seen any signs of deer although theres a big wood not to far away that holds a few Quote Link to post
The one 8,476
Nice size of woodland and if you say mostly hardwoods a few feeders won't go wrong for a start just watch deer don't knock them over and steal the feed Quote Link to post
jok 3,247
And there was little old me trying to help.. I'll give you a clue. I live near Derby also but in a village called Moira. Quote Link to post
