WILF 47,400
Surely the whole sorry affair is proof that there is no God? For if there were a God then 'he' would have never allowed such activity in his name..... Seems to me that religion is an excuse to inflict suffering and oppression on others. It dosnt work like that, I see it said plenty of times but it just isnt like that......."god" set the ball rolling and gave everyone a set of rules to make their life work.....what they choose to do with that information is down to them. The Catholic Church must have held massive power over here, they still do, so you can only imagine what It must have been like years ago. There are massive old churches in every little town, must of cost a fortune to build.....and all this while people went about starving and with no shoes! That has got f**k all to do with religion, as always, it's just a group of people wanting power over other people and dressing it up as Christianity........it's f***ing disgusting, but it's the people doing it that are disgusting not the bible itself.
jigsaw 11,875
Rotten to the core every last one of them no they werent, there were lots of very decent sympathetic religious folk that fed and gave THEIR OWN CASH to less well off. There were many in the orders that were just rotten evil f***ing humans...................same as in society,it was a massive honour to have a son or daughter in the religious orders long ago and some of these young people were forced to join by their parents, they had no other option.you need to remember Ireland back then was a totally opressed society due to the beliefs of the older folk and the young people were treated very harshly by their families, disputes over land and property were also reasons why some were forced to join,so they'd be out of the way and the eldes would inherit the farms..I lived right next to one establishment that has been mentioned in abuse reports and it was obvious what was going on there, but no one would go against the flow in fear of being seen as an outcast or trouble maker. People of my age will remember the ''respect'' that was instilled on us towards the church..It was stupid and looking back hard to believe the power they had on ordinary folk.....BUT they were different times, lots of folk were uneducated and poor and in no position to voice their concerns, the police were in cohoots with the church too and no doubt a few of them took advantage of those poor youngsters incarcerated within the walls of the convents. Its easy to throw aspersions on every religious person because of some, but there were some very good, christian, sympathetic people in religious life too.It doesnt excuse the deeds of the pure evil rotten c**ts though that were also within their ranks.Lots of the young that ended up in the care of the convents boarding schools were of disadvantaged backgroounds right from the minute they were born and so were easy prey for anyone wanting to vent their evil ways, same as bullying today. It was just that an extreme form of bullying and making financial gain from sweet simple kids. Bo Duke 420
Bad people will always do bad things, to get good people to do bad things you need religion.
jigsaw 11,875
good people usually dont do bad things in my view,if you do bad things your a bad person, end of...and if you can torture and sexually abuse kids and folk you were never a good person from day one.In my view if you have a conscience and any streak of righteous morality in you,you would never go and do those things. This has been thrashed out for years on this side of the world and a forgone conclusion has come from it all...................THERE WERE HORRIBLE ROTTEN HUMANS IN THE RELIGIOUS ORDERS AND THEY TOOK THEIR EVIL AND FRUSTRATIONS OUT ON INNOCENT KIDS,plenty in the BBC did the same, there were a hell of a lot of very GOOD priests and nuns too about, but they get steriotyped with the bad.the catholic church are a corrupt organisation as can be seen by with holding information, ignoring the abuse evidence and destroying evidence, refusing to speak out against their membersand trying to clear their conscience by offering paltry financial compensations to the victims, the b*****ds destroyed the lives if thousands of innocent kids who ended up comiting suicide and becoming self harming and alcohol and drug dependent adults..Look up a fr.Brian Darcy,he fought tooth and nail for the victims of clerical abuse and was warned if he didnt stop hed be thrown from the catholic church...He was and still is an amazing human being, there were lots more like him but unfortunately there were many evil ones too,and they made the good guilty by association......and just in case your all wondering I am not of any religious persuasion any more,,,non practicing catholic.I too couldnt support the likes of that organisation
WILF 47,400
Great post Jigsaw, I am a cradle catholic but I have over the past years seen that organisation for what it is. Like you I know a very good man who happens to be a priest, but he is the type of bloke you would just be friends with anyway and who would be Christian wether he wore a dog collar or not. He was married and has kids and grand kids but he lost his wife to the cancer and then became a priest......he is real. I tell my kids now that your "church" is in your heart and your mind and your actions.......it's has nothing to do with some black robe ordering you about and charging 20 quid to say mass to a dieing old age penshioner !!

MickC 1,825
Religion is only the most popular accepted cults and also used as a control factor,If your good you go to Heaven if your bad you go to Hell. Have a look through History and see how the Church got there wealth/Land/Power,nothing but a load a load of lies/deceit/threats told by them and they've been left uncontrolled and unanswerable from the very beginning to create the monster it is now . delswal 3,819
What really does grieve me is the fact that some of these nuns have admitted what they done to children i.e. punishments and forced adoptions.Yet still today they have not been held accountable, when I say accountable I do not mean, their pitiful confessions or three hail Mary's. Why have they not been criminally charged and sentenced accordingly? Any man or woman from within our main stream society committing such offences 30 - 40 years ago would have been charged and in cases recently has been proven so. What makes a religious order so special that they can admit their crimes and avoid punishment? Organised crime springs to mind. You think all these churches rectories convents and who knows how much land ect have been bought through donations gimme a break these animals need a major criminal investigation.
jetro 5,349
As jigsaw said some of these people were forced in the order. I know my neighbour was when he was young. He didn't want to go at all but had no choice. That's the way it was then. He was a priest in some other country and meet a nun that was also forced in the order as well. They left the church got married and moved back here. Nicer people you couldn't meet. His family disowned him after that. The church still holds a certain amount of power here still.
