waltjnr 6,952
When putting new line on reels,is there any advantage to putting some backing on first ,rather than having the spool full of the line you intend to use ?I appreciate on larger capacity reels ,you can save a few bob,and im guessing that's the only advantage, but just wanted to check before I waste a 1000yards ! neil cooney 10,416
Personally when filling a reel with new line I load the spool completely with new line. Every time you go fishing you use a bit of line and no matter how tight you trim a blood knot it will snag on a cast and eventually you'll find that blood knot. The only backing I use is on a fly reel. 1 Quote Link to post

Flipper_Al 1,012
I always fill mine up, but it can get expensive 2 bulk spools of GR60, is £36 What reels are you using, you can get spool reducers for some spools Quote Link to post
shellfish 63
just back mine up and change them regular .especially if I birdnest 1 Quote Link to post
neil r 1,861
All my big pits and bait runners for carp , pike and barbel with mono are done with no backing no matter how big the spools, but my spinning reels and multipliers with braid are done with backing which doesnt matter because im never going to cast far enough with a lure to make a difference Quote Link to post

treecreeper 1,136
I don't bother with backing either, if you use big pits and have a spare spool you can flip it but tbh I can never be arsed. Quote Link to post
