Bit of a guess from the Latin name for dogs . Canary?

:laugh: Well that was short and sweet. :laugh:

I've no idea why though. Were they a trade item for dogs or something?. Sort of "I'll give you a handful of these magic birds for that rather handsome deerhound you were going to take to market".

I've seen budgies play with a ball mind you :)

Gran Canaria The Island of dogs, The legend states that when the first Europeans arrived there were large dogs on the Island. But a counter claim is that the large dogs were actually Monk seals Canis Marinus sea dogs which was the Latin term for a seal. So the canaries could actually be named after a seal.

I knew the link between the Canary and the Isle of Dogs but if the Canary in it's wild state is the Lizard finch, where does that fit in ?

Maybe because they came from the Canary isle originally?
