Qbgrey 4,097
Ultimate is very difficult, if you got a whippet type then lamping rabbits and ferreting would be the ultimate test.no good trying to push it to take a brown bear then brag down the pub.silly question really,it should be reworded ultimate owner who knows how much thier dog can take without jacking or getting sick of certain pests. Or what way do use work probly sounds stupid question but thought id ask An impossible question to answer in less than a book, the terrain, the individual Hare, how fair you run them etc.etc.,plays a major part in the equation,i know land that id have been lucky to catch 1 in 10 and land were 2 and 3 from a few runs was common. The biggest factor is the mutt itself,a Saluky hybrid will out match any other on its preferred ground whilst a Whippet cur could catch more off their seat than on a run.Id say the average bred mutt equipped to run an Hare would do well to catch 3 out of 10,again im not talking about specialist bred coursing stock,i would have been happy with 3 out of 10 on a lot of the land i used to hunt,on other land id have been less happy.Lamping is another equation, lamping was the comfort factor for the useless daytime hare dog. 1 Quote Link to post

dogmad riley 1,344
Running dogs all day long the day time hare aomething av never done but hs to be a fox for test the dogs heart and gamenessAn average lurcher will muller a fox an average hare will muller an average lurcher.will an avarage lurcher MULLER a fox after fox after fox after fox,I think trunk was getting at that's something he does week in week out to test his dogs atb mudtheres a big diffenents in a hare dog getting the odd fox try give it 2 or 3 a night 2 or 3 nights a week an il put money it will spit it out now i no you get the odd freak dog that will do it but very very few theres alot of lads claim to be killing that many foxes a night but showing people is a different thing IMO an AVERAGE mutt will muller a fox,an AVERAGE Hare will Muller an AVERAGE lurcher, thus i find the Hare to be a better test of a Lurcher, which was my reply to the original thread and Trunks.Id never rate a dog that was excellent on fox and poor on Hare,id rate one that could do both with above AVERAGE results,id rate an EXCELLENT Rabbit,Feather and Hare dog above all others. Horses for courses , dogs for jobs comes to mind. A hare dog and a Fox dog are two different builds, you wouldn't breed an hare dog and expect it to be an out and out Fox killer and vice versa. Both dogs when breed and reared right are exceptional at there jobs. Some lurches are a Jack if all trades master at none, were others are master at one job so they will have two different tests Quote Link to post
j1985 1,984
If you're like some of the lads from my way it's a handful of rabbits, a lamped hare or two and some old ladies moggy! To be fair their dogs probably ain't even seen that much and they rate em, breed em, brag about em...f***ing wallys everywhere!! Anyway To the lads saying any old Lurcher can kill a fox is probs true, but to be consistent and do more than one a night a few nights a week taking stick that's when the "average" Lurcher will start Morris dancing and yapping like ya nans Yorkie and eventually shadowing em round the field or not running em at all. The truest test tho is a tricky one as like said they're bred for different jobs and the ones bred for a bit of everything are just that! A bit not a lot. So my conclusion is, there is no true test for all Lurchers...no one animal sets aside one from the other there's too many variables, would a coursing dog bag as many bunnies in a small field as a whippet type ??? Nope. Would a Deer dog put up with half as much grief a Half x bull grey would ??? Nope. Etc etc We should all just get Beddy whips go smash some red stags and forget all this nonsense. ? roybo 2,873
I think, possibly, the ultimate test is getting through he next few generations and them still being needed ,and the bad publicity they get on facebook etc not bringing more laws in to stop them being used 2 Quote Link to post

Some lurches are a Jack if all trades master at none, were others are master at one job so they will have two different tests In the not to distant past many a lurcherman and woman, owned the type of lurcher that took Hare in the same manner it took fox."A hare dog and a Fox dog are two different builds" is the rationale behind many of the modern lurcher breeding practices. Many of these modern breedings come about because the original breeding was not fit for purpose, thus they added this and that to overcome the original problem, the facts are if they had sourced better stock at the onset the they would seldom need to kennel 2 dogs to do 2 jobs when 1 should be adequate. At times lads want a one trick pony and i fully understand the need to produce a specialist type of jukel, fair play, yet are there other options?.
