shepp 2,285
My father said after the war, because people were so used to guns, nobody took much notice if was carrying one. He said as a kid he could just stick an air rifle over his shoulder and go for a mooch through fields nearby, nobody cared. Another guy a bit older I spoke to said he would carry a 22 rifle uncovered through the local high street and shoot Staines Moor which is now smaller and fragmented by the M25.

mackem 26,209
In the 70's I got my first air rifle,a Diana .177,used to walk around the streets knocking sparrows and starlings off people's tv Aerials and out of trees for ferret food, apart from the odd "mind the windows" no one batted an eyelid, nowadays we would all be ASBO'd,I graduated to a .22 rim fire, rounds were easy enough to get even without a licence, and used it to decimate the local seagull population,it would be funny to wind the clock back even for one single day.

crowsnest 55
my mates dad was gifted a greyhound by a 1st division footballer back in the late 60s in the pub, said footballer done most of his training there, me and my mate used to take the greyhound out hare coursing, what a dog,1 out of 6 runs if we were lucky, did'nt know any better then , ran the poor bugger in the ground, also took him on the local shoot after roosting birds at night with the caty, but it was a hell of a job to get him to let them go,not much good for resale, but what he was good at was the local feral cat population round the loony bin, we made a tidy dent in them, no one batterd an eyelid. loony bin, closed, soon to be housing, local shoot, big housing estate, courseing land ,moterway right thru it, not sure if footballer still played 1st team then so not nameing, as still alive.

Good memories, but I doubt it,d be big news that a 60,s footballer spent some time in a boozer! Ha
dogmad riley 1,343
Climbing onto roofs of derelict mills to steal kestrels eggs, ratting up the stream with a bandy jrt x and a trowel, playing Manhunt with the GATS and Diana's up the old pow station. All before my balls had properly dropped : Cheers, D.[/quote Sounds pretty much the same as my childhood kestrel nests, gat guns, snares, ratting, ferreting and lurcher running all day next to the bmx ??
onion jonny 526
big memories of the 60/70 every kid my age had an airgun, some kind of dog and a ferret in a bank bag or a top hose sock with a knot tie to stop getting out, daziell was the bakery just on the land at the old mill and next to our housing scheme so plenty rats as all the old unsold rolls were dumped there, no wonder theres a shortage of wild birds as we shot the lot stuckies sparrows crows anything went, we used to shoot each other from a distance then get a pennies worth of broken biscuits from the bakery and off home, would pay handsomely for another day like them good fun good mates a great memories.
devon flighter 421
As kids in the 70s used to try and catch pheasants with the collie dog used to have a go at rats with air rifles at the nearby sewage farm and tried to dig them out with a couple of russels on standby just messing about in reality. Got into the lamping/coursing ferreting early 80s. A couple of us had diana sp50 air pistols anyone remember them and shot jack shit with them happy days. had one similar ,think it was the sp10 that shot bb or pellets with a tilt up front to hold the bb ,also had a gat "didnt everybody?" and a wooden handled gat look alike, cant remember its name similar to a gat but more rounded and much more desirable then because of the wood "to me" that got confiscated by the school (it seemed a good idea at the time to take it so i could shoot on the way home along the canal !!!!) then i progressed to the premier league and got hold of a webley ! edit it was a diana g2 i had confiscated absolutely gutted
kanny 20,430
Rounding up a unlikely pack of dogs and lads of the estate and going for a proper mooch with sometimes 20 + dogs of all sorts ...spending most the summer holidays camping ruff up the local woods ...There was so much more access back in the early 80s all the factories and brick yards never had fences and were great places for rabbits and Fox and nobody gave a shit if you was on there as long as you was respectful .we would regularly shoot squirrel in the local cemetery and would often be approached and told what a good job we were doing...nowadays you would have the armed response unit on your ass and the factories are all fenced up now to stop the thieving smackhead scum. .it's a real shame our kids will never have the freedom we did. kanny 20,430
Kids nowadays have had an adrenaline rush if they got to level 5 on Grand Theft Auto. But is it there fault? as I say in my post above kids now don't have the freedom we did ..if kids tried to build a den or tree house or a rope swing now you can guarantee there would be some clipboard Nazi hell bent on health and safety saying they can't. ..it's easy to say kids of today blah blah blah but it's our generation that have taken away there freedom.
Dunkanon 380
out first light, wak for miles, my older brother used to take me to all asorts of wonderful places looking for rats, scrap yards, sewage works etc, the weapons where rocks and sticks. back home for tea no one was worried you had been out all day. later on we got gat guns and if we found no rats etc to shoot at then we would have a wee war and shoot each other, stung a bit but rarely broke the skin. Not really hunting, just kids growing up and messing around. Later on little folding 410s great wee guns for taking a few pheasant, didnt shoot each other with them tho!
