matt1979 766
Always had the long term plan to (when the old pets die off) to add another terrier or terrier x to my team and end up with 2 bushing dogs and 1 runner. But having seen my little whippety lurcher through his first season I sometimes now change my mind and think a couple of runners and 1 busher would be a better option for me and how and where I hunt . My theory being the little terrier generally flushes anything from the land I hunt (hedgerows and small corpses on arable land) and although she would benefit from help in thick cover the help might be more profitable on the outside in the form of another runner as a catch is IMO the harder if the 2 arts on the land I hunt. Fir example if the rabbit bolts wrong hedge side etc People's experience or thoughts appreciated atb Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Just another angle to consider - Another runner will also be able to double up and enter cover should the terrier need backup, whereas another terrier won't be able to double up on the outside. I know that if my terrier is in a big area of cover and getting the run around one of the lurchers will go in and bush with her while one stays on the outside. Both of my lurchers are fairly good bushers though on their own. Saying that I would like another busher at some point. And another runner. Lol Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
Gaz suppose in an ideal world as you say you would have both options but three dogs will be my limit in the future. Another angle is the fact that the terrier should be able to work bushing well into her twilight where as in my experience runners careers are usually shorter or risk do injury higher so having a younger running dog would probably be more useful. It's all if and buts, but I guess others have the same quandary atb Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
My lurcher will enter core like a nutter at the minute but to be honest it's not something I encourage in the main as want him on the outside, can't fault his commitment and true though I suppose and he is starting to clock into waiting on the outside atb Quote Link to post
squab 2,875
type of cover i work a lurcher is not getting in and for me would be waste of time even if it could or did, couple decent bushers to keep the pressure on,get stuck in no matter what they facing types forcing a bolt with a lurcher that knows exactly how to work with them, reading the action and positioning it self correctly to achieve a result even if that means quarry bolting from the other side of cover. a decent lurcher aint gonna need no terrier to help it out thats for sure, its down to you what you can keep to achieve best results for me two bushers and a lurcher is working well another busher in the future and id have it cracked lol atb 1 Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
I currently only have one of each and often find myself wishing I had another runner when something bolts the wrong side of the hedge. But then if I did have 2 runners I don't know how easy it would be to have one of them constantly on the other side of the hedge - I think it would always tend to want to come back to whichever side I was on. But regardless of whether I just stick with one or add another, I shall almost certainly breed from my busher in a year or two and keep a pup back. So I'll either end up with 2 bushers and one runner or two of each... Quote Link to post
squab 2,875
a decent lurcher brought up working along side the bushers wont care what side hedge your on as inevitably your going to be the wrong side lol 1 Quote Link to post
hjckcff 1,738
one of each is ample if they are both good at there job. i often think of another lurcher but it would take the work from the one i have. . its easy to end up over dogged and turn a happy pastime into a stressfull hobby. just my thoughts Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
I don't think the work I do 1 of each would be ample, would still enjoy it no doubt, but wouldn't catch much if anything to be honest and that's not IMO because my dogs are crap lol sometimes have 5 or 6 dogs and it doesn't gaurenteed a catch not that it particular bothers me. I am into bushing and general mooching and as long as the dogs are well mannered then they get plenty of exercise and work, guess it's different if your lampin etc but I don't do moloch on the lamp atb Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
I agree Matt. 1 of each no good around here. Massive areas of cover with odd rabbits dotted about. More the merrier ?? Quote Link to post
