Chaff 3,590
A different beast being roe my mates dog pre ban of course took 4 roe in an afternoons ferriting She was only 19tts whippet in looks although she was a cross not sure what with. My point being she had good technic at tripping them over. Her weight compared to a roe was a big difference not sure what exactly, but the last time I had one on my back it sure did make me puff and blow. Atb Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,209
The water craic is true, they are phenomenal swimmers BUT a big part of their built in survival methods means they take to water as a form of safety, they do this VERY regularly, just as the Wildebeest & Bison do,Red Deer are exactly the same, with the Red's it probably comes from when they were hunted by wolves centuries ago,a stream,a lake, river, tarn or loch even when not overly deep they will take to the water in an aid to help them survive..they have no equal on our shores,a herd of 30 can pass you by not 50 yards away yet you barely hear them for their size they really are or can be light footed..fantastic animals ? 4 Quote Link to post

MickC 1,825
Some funny opinions on here lol never heard a bit of water will stop a deer never mind a red .... We should of gone running em in rain when it was legal they might of laid down hahaa Well my post wasn't opinion it was cold hard facts,I never said "water stops deer" what I'm saying is,when a beast is under pressure getting tired etc it will look for any respite to save itself using the land to it's advantage and anybody that has ever run them in there natural surroundings will tell you the same.As already pointed out it seems to be part of there natural instinct to take to the water when under threat, some don't but a lot of them do. Chaff 3,590
I watch a heard of reds quite regular during the summer months separated by large fence dogs run straight for them then run up and down fence all teeth and snot, the deer just give a sideways look and walk on not giving a toss I guess the fence gives them security. I to have some photos taken on phone. Will have to dig out the slr and take some decent ones Think .243 is the best way of getting one in your freezer 1 Quote Link to post
