walshie 2,804
My pup is a bit older than that but he was eating about 10% of his bodyweight per day spread over 3 meals at that age. Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I hate to see any dog under weight and there's no excuse for it but is it good advise to say to give a pup as much as it wants at 5 1/2 months old. Good grub , yes, well fed ,yes, but personally I don't like to see an obese pup and some, if allowed, will eat themselves fat. The way I look at it is that all working dogs need stamina and in any walk of life do obese kids go on to win marathons ? I mentioned before that I don't like to see obese pups and some folk on here thought that I was saying that a pup should be skinny. That's not what I'm saying. But does obesity as a youngster not affect internal organs and bone growth and especially wind. And bare in mind that I keep my terriers heavier than most lads keep their's, but that's how I've always done it. When I was young I remember an old bulldog fancier telling me that some of the big fanciers in the States used to get their best dogs of Hillbillies in the Appalachians etc. because the dogs were reared the hard way and always had brilliant wind. Not saying I'm right or wrong just looking for opinions. 5 Quote Link to post
tote 856
As much as it will eat. Not for me that line of thought. Some pups will eat as much as they need which is fine, but some will just eat for the sake of it if it's left in front of them making themselves obese which in turn puts extra pressure/strain on organs/bones/tendons etc. I'd be more concerned by the quality not the quantity a pup was being fed, good quality grub is more important than the amount. Don't think anyone could give you an exact amount e.rhys.w as there's too many variables, size, weight, how active the pup is, the only person who can judge that is yourself as you see him everyday. 1 Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
Think in fairness there is a big difference between a running dog and a terrier. I have always fed pups what they can eat when growing so quick, none of them have been obese or at all fat. They grow so quick at that age and fly around the place when awake can't see how they would get obese personally. But then as soon as mine are jabbed up they toddle along with the losers dogs and are within reason expected to keep up. Pups like kids need good nutrition at a young age and plenty of it, far more risk in my eyes from under feeding than over feeding atb Quote Link to post
barkers 10
depends on the pup realy , but ive noticed a lot of bull xs are greedy eaters an would eat to much if left to it . Quote Link to post
paulsmithy83 567
dont wanna sound a dick but if your having to ask such a basic question do you think your ready for dog ownership. but feed it enough so its healthy. not over weight not under weight. brake the meals up to mutliple meals a day and thats about it really Quote Link to post

I've kept terriers, lurchers, strongdogs ,a gundog and a hound or two all with the same aim, to make them as good a worker as possible. Quote Link to post
