roybo 2,873
thing is some people live and breath hunting its there way of life and hats off to them they want to be the best at their game and obviously want to be talked about! Don't get me wrong I love the dogs and hunting and spend a lot of my time doing it but I also work play rugby and renovating a house also a girlfriend who I have to see saying that she will come hunting lol iv had a shit month and half with the dogs pups being ill being put to sleep my best working lurcher being injured wouldn't run ! Iv watched other lads dogs who are miles better than mine work which I really don't mind absolutely great to see and something to work towards ! But then my Hancock pup who I honestly thought was a down and out pulled something out the bag this weekend that I'm still smiling about and buzzing and my uncle that's been hunting since a boy and now 75 and still has terriers and whippets said he hasn't seen me this excited in months ! What my uncles taught me since I was young don't worry about what everyone else's is doing or got in their kennels aslong As your happy and dogs are working keep putting the miles in ! I think so many people look at the so called LEGENDS of the game and worry about what there doing they forget to enjoy themselves when their with their own dogs ! Come on mate, who wrote this , fess up.... Spot on , Ive been guilty of worrying what people think and what my dog should be doing, at the end of the day we have to look after our animals and they only have to please us, thankfully after an intensive 5 years of owning a lurcher all my goals and expectations have ebbed away and I feel much more relaxed about lurcher work and what I actually want from a dog , I/he suceeded and failed in equal measure, to his credit he taught me more than any great lurcher ever could and I still cast my eye looking for him when out on a mooch, but he's not there as I had him PTS a few weeks back as for all his faults, lack of prey drive and general annoyances his dog aggressive behaviour was the straw that broke the camels back, in retrospect I know I've done the right thing by myself. I've a cracking little busher who I enjoy for what he is which is easy going and pleasant to be around and the possibility of a pup in the summer, a blank canvas to try and bring on as a social , good to be around kind of dog, that can hopefully put a bit away too lol. I've just been given another son last week and with a new job and a living in a new location, I've a fair amount to fill my time, but I have the bug now and don't think I could be without a running dog for too long, I don't expect world beater as I'm not dedicated enough or should i say I have other priorities and my time is limited by life, but to be absorbed by watching dogs work and in some of the most beautiful places, it's hard to beat. Atb Joe Just take your time pal wait the right one ,at the right time for you,and I'm sure you'll get it right, 1 Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Joe, I gotta hand it to you it was the right thing to do. I mentioned it to you before on here, if he really is that bad the best thing to do would PTS, that would be my option. Other people might rehome but if he was unpredictable what's the point. I had my old bitch put down also, gutted but wasn't putting up with how she was. Not fair on either of you and pointless keeping something that doesn't keep you happy. Atb with your next choice, whatever it is you choose. 1 Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Ye my first bitch lived in. Now my dogs live out, you never know what is around the corner with working dogs so the least amount attachment to family the better, as they don't tend to understand much lol Atb Quote Link to post

Atb Joe You done the right thing mate, you knew it for a while just a tough decision. Loads going on now though, lot's of opportunities down here to get a new pup going, and that little busher of yours will put some game in front of it for sure, onwards and upwards mate 1 Quote Link to post

brenner 773
Cheers some, its the sh*t end of owning dogs made harder by him being a family pet and the fact I put my heart and soul into him, but as a mate put it I know where he is and how good he had it, but he had negatively impacted my life for too long. Next chapter.. Anyway I reckon THL must be full of crazy lurchermen lol, title should been who's the most sane! if ye ask me .. sanity is way overrated . Leave sanity for the few that have to indure it 1 Quote Link to post
