Food For Thought . - "lead".

Recommended Posts

After a family get together some months back a family friend ribbed me over a few shot at the bottom of our spare toilet saying " Can`t tell this is a hunting/shooting man`s house" can you ? :icon_redface: ,- ah well.

Anyway this got me thinking,- when i clean out my shotgun barrels the patches are smothered black with all sorts of residue including lead and those pellets go into the food on our table :icon_eek: ,- or once did ! I have ceased to eat shot pigeon etc from my shotguns now and i pass those pigeon on, to bird of prey keepers.

When i clean the barrel of my air rifles ( very rarely) there is a thick lead residue taken "BUT" i always gain meat for the table by "head shot" - so never ever have lead in that food, "period" !

When you de-breast a pigeon that has been heart/lung shot with an air rifle, the pellet does not enter the breast meat (side on shot, shot accurately), so clearly food shot by an air rifle has got to be healthier and far less damaged.

I thaught bird of prey keepers couldn't feed shotgun shot birds/rabbits to their birds of prey?

If you are that bothered use steel,as I do if I am going to be feeding to birds of prey.

I`m not bothered Charlie as i`ve had wood pigeon in my diet for years, - it`s a wife thing you see :icon_redface:, since she chomped down on a shot gun pellet and then myself cleaning the barrels.

I`d look well giving her and my sons "Steel Shot Pigeon" would`nt i ? :icon_eek::laugh:

Air rifles for the wild food and keep the peace, i think.( until game season  )

It has been suggested for many years lead is not good for us, but we have been eating wildlife with lead shot in it for 150 years or more.

Some people have eaten considerable quantities, and we still sell the stuff in the shops and restaurants with warnings about the possibility of lead shot.

As far as I'm aware no side effects have been reported/found of eating all this lead, and if it was that bad the H&S brigade would have had it banned in food long ago.

So there we have it,- "The choice is yours".

Personally because i shoot both shotgun and air rifle regularly, out of game season my food for the table will come via the air rifle generally.

In the game season , game will come by my shot guns generally, all else by my air rifles.

Just my way, no slight intended .
