Phil Lloyd 10,738
What are member's opinions regarding the Pro's and Con's of these two breeds please.. I am mostly trapping moles and rabbits, during the Winter months and do not really need, a 100%, off roader,..but it would be handy to have some degree of 4x4, when parking up inside gateways, etc Anything particular to look out for when purchasing a used example ? Many thanks, Phil.
bodach 25
Get a dacia duster 4x4 the cheap option with steel wheels, nothing fancy and not bad mpg also cheap to insure. Can't fault mine had it two years now and loads of room, better ground clearance than Subaru, you can pick up a 2 year old less 10k and extend warranty for 5 years add £450. Dunkanon 380
Had a Legacy Outback 4x4 estate for a while, heavy on petrol, good on fields, very roomy, great up and down motorway, very comfortable, but like i says, a thirsty beast when you put your foot down.
as88 146
Both the same really in comparison, both decent motors good solid engines, none turbo id opt for. Id say legacy if you are ferreting a lot the forrester boot fills up quick. Legacy has more boot space. Check for the backend been on its ass and the under side isnt batterd from been dogged in.
dogmad riley 1,339
Forester I have one and love it, a very capable AWD and lots of room as the seats fold flat so gives excellent room in the back. Very comfy driving position with arm rest and heated seats. Got a set of goodyear wranglers on and its gone everywhere on and off road with ease. Also I think they have better ground clearance that the other subarus. Go for the 2.0x with dual range gear box
forest of dean redneck 11,524
I been looking at the foresters parked up in town ,I nearly bought an old one local last year, but got put off by tales of thirstyness and head trouble. They do look like tough old battle wagons and seen some cheap ones for sale. My advice would be to check for off roading damage and other thing to consider in your line of work is if it's got a police marker on it for hare coursers your going to constantly get unwanted attention when your doing a legitimate pest control job,
Bosun11 537
Phil, the man to drop a pm to would be Lucky off here. He knows more about Scoobies than anyone and a very helpful chap too.
Marsh Lad 321
Great cars bomb proof. Nice to drive, great vision and never been stuck yet. When mine eventually packs in. I wouldn't hesitate to get another. With your money Phil, you should buy both

I had mk2 golf gti years ago told me I was getting 35 mpg ,and I had a heavy right foot in them days, lol

Many thanks, Phil. Great motor for a countryman very reliable and well priced ,,used. ive got an old 2000 reg forester go up and down the country in it covering on avrg 500 mile a week most weeks more. find your self one thats been well maintained with the history to back it up an 1 thats not been dogged. rear suspension can sag on them an result in needing new rear shocks/springs i only buy them with out tow packs,,, rather one thats not been used to tow for the past years. i prefer auto some dont,,, the manuals are great ive had both but due to the milage i cover autos suit me,,, they handle as well on the dirt as they do on the tarmac,, they aint a defender but are capable motors with a level header behind the wheel. legacys are again great, lower then the forester so a down point for me,,. buying a used motor allways a lottery but use your loaf and you wont go far wrong mate.. i know for a immaculate legacy for sale,,, id say the foresters are the wiser choice but after all its you thatle be driving it feller hope you find a good 1

Nicepix 5,650
I had a Forester auto and with Dunlop winter sports tyres on I could get most places on the farms when pigeon shooting and pheasant feeding and it was OK on the road too. I was only getting 26 mpg according to the odo' and I discovered that the reading was about 10% out meaning that I was only getting just less than 24 mpg out of it. That was the only downside. Other than that I loved it. Incidentally, I did 750 miles in 14 hours in it, including the time waiting for and on the Shuttle, in snow at temps down to -25C. When I came across a lorry and the outside lane was virgin snow I just put my foot down and went 'off piste' Brilliant car.
fifeman 164
Great motors, me and my mate have had 3 foresters. Only downside is they are so thirsty on petrol. And the newer diesels are a bit too expensive for a dogging motor
