chesney 5,458
There seems to be a craze for dogs taken punishment at the moment with some lads 1 Quote Link to post
Walt - Jabsco 95
I've bred off iron hard, I still get iron hard mute loons but I don't want them. I admire the raw courage but I don't like to see my terriers getting hurt, plenty of lads walk around with heavily scared dogs but I cringe when I see them and I certainly don't like having them in my yard. I used to take the piss out of old Nicolas but as I've got older I'm getting just the same, I used to call him Beatrix. People seem to have lost the concept of terriers WORKING their quarry instead of going balls out for the kill. surely a hard bitch is needed at some stage to continue a " working" line jmho . chesney 5,458
I'm happy once they stay not in a position ta be choosey bout what way they work once stay that's all that matters imo Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,463
Nope, some believe so but I'm not one of them. There's a difference between hard and drive, I want a terrier that's full of drive and does just enough to get the job done, tick away all day until you put the daylight in then they can take hold. It's a fine line mate, it's up to each and everyone of us to make their own decisions and go with their own consionse. 7 Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
I don't know but in my humble opinion surly a hard working bitch that don't get battered is worth 10 hard dogs to any thinking person Quote Link to post

chesney 5,458
Is it best ta only breed a bitch and dog were a high percentage of the siblings on both sides are doing the job. Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
IMO i reckon that if a person keeps puting sounder to sounder sooner than later they will end up with terriers not capable of doing a job,im talking about out and out sounders not mixing types.I was always led to believe that when it comes to breeding the chosen bitch should be more than capable of finishing a fox if needs be and the dog in question should be able to finish on a regular basis and this is what i have tried to do down through the years even though i have not bred many litters.A sounder is ok in a place where there is a good chance of a bolt but if it becomes a dig at sat 2-3 metres the last thing you need is the dog moving if presure comes on it and that is usually what happens with a sounder.A mate of mine had a very well bred bitch that would stay all day and night but soon as the quarry started to push she would move with it,f***ing nuicence and no good in my eyes.Nobody wants to see a terrier get punished everytime its in the ground but its part and parcel of terrier work,if they did not want to be there they would come away. 7 Quote Link to post

smasher 1,055
Imo the bitch is always under estimated when the offspring do well, it always seems to be the dog that gets the bulk of the credit. For me the bitch is as, if not more important than the dog, It's also my opinion that a good steady honest worker that goes up the gears as needed is harder to produce than an out an out hard dog 4 Quote Link to post
HPR 1,161
I'm my opinion it's not all about the dog and bitch . It's just as important of what they came out of and the generation before that . I.e parents and grandparents . People go to these so called great dogs how many asked what there parents did etc . 1 Quote Link to post
HPR 1,161
This argument is simple breed from the best bitch and dog which have been produced from the the best bitchs and dogs . If you can't do that then you'll need some good luck and plenty of holes . Quote Link to post
