Danielm7353 3
hunting season is coming to an end, so this year i'm going to give my lad a go at the lurcher racing. he is relatively fit now galloped around the fields every morning. thinking about getting him started on the dog walker/treadmill, anyone have tried it? if so for how long would you let them on it? etc.etc. i know these have been a great success for greyhounds as my cousins and neighbors have proven in the recent years of coursing. any advice greatly appreciated Quote Link to post

mad4it 694
tread mills are a great way of getting dogs back to fitness after a long lay up but you cant beat road work starting of with walking than builting up to troting them with a bike it gets you aswell so it a win win. frankel 2,123
How long will the races be? If only sprints won't need to be super fit will they? Quote Link to post
king 11,972
I bought a reebok treadmill 2 days ago for my lurcher.seen it on eBay spares or repairs. The guy said the drive belt from motor to walking belt kept slipping off. Opened it up the walking belt pulley had moved 1" inwards.I tapped it back out to line the pulleys back up belt on and it's running great its as good as new bargain for £16 lol. I had 1 before and used to put my lurcher bitch on it.set to 5mph and leave her for an hour sometimes 1.5 hrs. i started her walking first for a few mins then upped the speed till she shifted from walking to trotting and that was 5 mph. The second day I opened the garage she went straight to it stood on and looked at me to turn it on lol. I was out daily ferreting or lamping. And the odd days I couldn't get out she would be on the treadmill. Quote Link to post
green dragon 701
Anyone thort about useING a slat mill or carpetmill? Quote Link to post
slip lead 862
If ya racing at fairs the best preparation, if it's fit, would be a lure machine, start short, and work up to a good bit over what ya be running at the fair, then find a nice, not to steep, hill and keep increasing until there flying up a hill about 1/5 at 150m/ 200m long.. I think you will find most if not all greyhound trainers use them, Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,453
Not all use them but a lot do I think. Mortons walkers in Ireland make about the best walkers but they dont do a single. It may take you a while to get your dog used to one but they will do a dog good, but has said drag lure would be better for sprinters. You can never leave a dog un supervised on a treadmill/walker,bad things can happen, and make sure dog has emptied before going on. 10 mins to start is plenty.Dont forget they are continuous.
