I posted about 4 years ago asking for a local decent perch venue and only this year found one lol, but on the bright side not many people seem to know what the lake holds.

Been going down the lake with a very light set up and pinkies to catch some small fish to use as bait, then using these I've been doing okay on a 6lb mainline float setup to a size six. All of these where caught in one session, not huge but when your used to the usual fish of a couple ounces then can't complain...

When bream fishing I often cursed the greedy little feckers but when the fishing's slow a few greedy Perch often saved the day.

Love them and can't wait for the day I catch a 3 pounder, I know I will.

I had one around 2.5 pound on a shrimp fishing at pontoon bridge for salmon, I was raging when I landed it fs I thought I was on for a salmon lol, but after a few hrs it dawned on me it was a cracking perch

i know how you feel Neil, I always find once you've had a fish (any fish) you're mindset gets more positive.

When I fished the Loddon years ago I knew for a swim that held perch - so in time I just used to go there chuck a lobworm in, loosefeed red maggot and then invariably get one withtin half an hour. Then I'd proceed to the other swims after chub&barbel in a far better frame of mind!

When you are bream fishing  Why on earth fish for bream? Horrible, slimy things. There's a lake over here where you can catch them almost as fast as you can chuck them up the banking :D

I think that holding perch and bass that way originated in the States and has become fashionable. The French anglers do it too. But then again they have some strange habits. They'd rather spend ten minutes faffing about trying to land a 1lb fish by hand than spend ten Euros on a net so that they wouldn't have to.

Alas I think the good days of bream fishing here in Ireland are long gone.

The shoals are not there anymore but believe me back in the day lobbing a big feeder out 80 yards into a massive lough or river and that tip turning around and there's a good chance it's a 3,4 or 5 lb slab every cast is great fishing and at the end of the day when it comes to taking your keepnet out you have to shout up the bank for someone to help you lift it. Magic days.

Nowadays a 8 oz wild brownie on a fly is good enough for me and for the odd change of tactics a tench or two from somewhere not heavily fished but I still aim to break the 3 pound barrier on a perch.

LOL, knowing my luck I'll probably do it with a nymph cast for a trout, but you wont hear me complaining.

Back in the day I would regularly go over to the Emerald Isle for a bit of bream bashing in the English close season. Then someone discovered Denmark and we started to go there instead. Best catch of slabs I had was 15 all over 7lb. I was fishing on my own as my three mates had decided to go pike fishing and we had all blanked at the location the day before. I just had a feeling and it proved to be right on the day. But, the film on the Olympus jammed and I had no photos to show for it and no witnesses either. :icon_redface:

Great Avatar you have Neil. One of my heroes.

Then you know the type of fishing I'm talking about Nicepix.

My first encounter of bream was on Lough Ramor while I was spinning for pike and perch.

An old lad came down with a 6 foot rod, what looked like 20 lbs BS line and a 2 hook rig, size 8s.

He put about 10 maggots on each hook and cast into the lake, no feeding of any kind.

It was a fish a cast and he threw every single fish onto the bank behind him. Dozens and dozens of big bream.

I asked him why he was killing them and he said that the lake was polluted. I know now he meant with coarse fish.

When he went I got one of the fish, held it in the water and it swam off. My father reckons it was over 8 lbs and there was another 2 dead 8 pounders on the bank.

That was around 35 years ago. If it was now I'd probably drown the old b*****d.

Yes, Jim Corbett, a great hunter and a pioneer in conservation.

i watched the yanks fishing for bass off a boat, and they all landed there fish by hand by there mouths like the dickheads they are, i really hate to see fish held up for the camera by there mouths, no respect at all for the fish, you've got to be an utter wanker to hold a fish in that way,

Bit deep that Tilly I think the lad as got the gist not the best way to treat your catch well I hope he has & respects the fish he does land atb Flacko

yeah maybe flacko, i see what your saying, i see the yanks doing it all the time they actually hold it horizontal by the jaw for the camera, it winds me up, i just saw that perch being held out by its jaw and it set me off, i apologies if it was a bit deep.
