Blackdog92 2,047
What do you lads think is the best way to net a hedge row with a row of stock fencing on each side? At the moment ive jist been climbing in and purse netting the holes like i would most places. And sometimes run my longnet down one side and have the dog on the other for any that break that side. the fences are about 5ft apart so i had an idea to put a couple of gate/pocket nets from one fence to the other in places so it makes it harder for them to bolt from hole to hole. I think the purse netting is probally the best option im just intrested to see what other folks methods are. Quote Link to post
jmilam08 193
Few stop nets from fence to fence and a shotgun covering the holes, some good sport to be had shootin over the ferrets. Quote Link to post
lllluke1 329
Try a few stop nets set at 90 degrees to the hedge. I find a lot of rabbits will run out and down the hedgeline, a stop net set there will catch them 4 Quote Link to post
Jax13 251
you could always try running a board through the hedge and stop net either side of the hedge to catch them before the fence. in theory if you run a net either side and a board each end you shouldnt get anything escaping so the ferrets or net should catch pretty much everything. the theory is sound, in practice there are always the odd ones that get away!!! Gaz6br 193
Long net both sides and chuck the dogs in middle flush them out ? Purse net any hole you can get to Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
There is no right or wrong way to net a hedge, as each hedge is different, in that where the rabbits are going to bolt too. Say for an example you have a hedge with two 50 acre fields each side of it, it is not often a rabbit will try and bolt across a field of that size. Given that scenario I would use little five yards stop nets set at intervals along the hedge both sides. If you can get a net through the hedge in places all the better. That said even on those type of hedges rabbits will still bolt out in to the field when they come near a corner, so I like to put a 25 yard net on the corner of such fields. If on the other hand the fields are small then a rabbit could break across the field at any time, so then I tend to run nets parallel to the hedge. with maybe a short stop net between the hedge and the net to catch the ones that do bolt along the hedge. There is one thing for certain though you will always loose some rabbits and be always learning. TC Edited January 31, 2016 by tiercel 6 Quote Link to post
terryd 8,385
Stop nets are very handy in them situations. but I am like you if I can get a purse net on I will. I need to use stop nets more. I spent an age the other day literally on me stomach crawling about in the hedge. I left the dog round one side and he had his rabbit but the one my side slipped the net and nipped out in the field. A well placed stop net or two could have saved a few thorns in me scalp and I would more than likely have caught the rabbit. 3 Quote Link to post
mad4it 694
I would use stop net across the hedge from fence with either a dog or shot gun as said some good sport can be had shooting over the ferrets Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
If its a hollow hedge or double fence sometimes I stick fertilizer bags in every few yards to turn them out, sometimes it does the trick! 2 Quote Link to post
terryd 8,385
I saw on here once some one zig zagged a longnet in and out so I gave it a whirl once and that worked well too In my case though I seldom have a long hedge of rabbits to go at its a case of the dog marking and maybe one rabbit out or two if I am lucky. So its often down to how much net am I prepare to set for one rabbit or more importantly carry as I need to travel light 3 Quote Link to post

lllluke1 329
Not prime no more. At least yours holds some rabbits. I've only seen two in the past two months since mixi came through. Wiped out everything both sides of the valley. Quote Link to post
ZeusPolecat 185
I got my stop nets especially for a certain permission that has a fence either side of the hedge. I measured the distance between them then attached my poles at that length. Just pass a pole through to a friend on the other side anywhere I find a gap in the hedge. Using a board works well enough too, I've used cardboard if its dry enough. Quote Link to post
