johnpee 214
Does any you lads use them for your dogs ? How long to you put them on for and at what speed? Do you see much gain in muscle and fitness ?
king 11,984
I had 1 yrs ago John.the lurcher I had was just over 23" I put her on the first time started it up and she took to it great. The next night took her in the garage she stood on it and looked at me to turn it on. I used to put it on 5mph for 1hr.when I was cleaning the ferrets court. She could just fit on it.her back feet were leaving the belt about 2" from the end. Edit to add.anything slower than 5mph and she would be between a walk and a trot. And looked awkward.so find a speed that the dog just moves up from fast walk to trot. Edited January 30, 2016 by king
delswal 3,819
Time and speed will depend on what condition your dog is in. Sack the tread mill, hit the tarmac the dog will enjoy it more.
South hams hunter 8,938
Had a big leccy one that I could fit a 27tts dog on and could trot well at 9/10 kmh and the 23tts bitch use ro have it on 14/15 kmh as she had more room and could almost get in her stride. She used to absolutely love it amd would do as long as she was allowed. The old bullx use to love the slat mill and would go for hours but the little bitch used to just slow down til it stopped. biggest problem with mills is that you still have to warm up amd cool down amd seems people use them as a replacement where they should be an extra. I would do a 30 min walk, 1-2 hours on the mill and then a 30 min walk a few times a week and tbh I dont know if it made a difference or not

gnasher16 30,591
Having had bulldogs years ago ive never seen another breed run a mill with the same intensity.... i realise ive probably never been around the calibre of lurchers some of you lads have but they always look a bit half hearted running them to me.....we would always use an electric mill for maintenance work and a free running slat mill for conditioning i would imagine an electric mill would be fine to keep a lurcher ticking over but to get them in top shape you would want him out in the field surely ?

I have him out in the fields and do road work everyday without fail he just seems to have that bit extra in the tank and I don't have anymore extra time on my hand as I've already said so only other think a was thinking of was put him on the treadmill couple days a week

By worse do you mean more exercise needed and take longer to tire?

Gaz_1989 9,539
I'm going through a similar stage at the moment with my youngster John. Around the 9 month mark she was becoming a real headache. More so than before. So increased her mileage to wear her out. By 11 months she was doing 8 mile by the bike after work plus a 3-4 mile mooch when I woke up. But with this increased fitness came an increased ability to bounce around for longer and be a dick for longer. She's now 12 months old. Will run 10 mile by the bike for fun. Mooch for 2-3 hours later on and then lamp the same night for as long as I want her to. Big runs, small runs whatever. And the next morning? Ready to go again for more of the same. I would be tempted to agree with down south and as long as he's getting plenty, maybe don't bother with the treadmill.
tb25 4,627
Give it a good bone to chew on.that should keep it out of bother for a bit.
