Bosun11 537
A working terrier show Is just "That" a show. Not a test of ability nor a scar competition. A working terrier show is a good place to catch up an have the craic. Some like some don't like . As for judging, of coarse it's a guess but I would sooner call it "opinion" and the right judge would have a more educated "opinion" . Spot on Treehands. Quote Link to post
pablo esc 1,598
Looks don't come into it, unless you have a idea of a breed. Since some really looking the real deal, but when the game was good, the shit hit the fan, talks for it's self, when the going gets tough, Quote Link to post

Treehands 1,417
Of coarse looks come into it , how else can you form an opinion ? As stated it's a show not a test. Only when your eyes have witnessed the terrier at work , can you rightly Judge it. 4 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
I remember a show near Gloucester when an amusing event occurred .I was judging terriers which hadnt started yet and was sat just taking it all in ring side .My name was on the program and I overheard a rather large women talking to a small crowd that she and her husband had dug with this judge ,naming me .I let it run before asking politely what this judge preferred in terriers to which she said he's a black dog man I think to which another in the group said no he's a lakeland man .I had never met any of them , imagine their surprise when I was judging .That was by invite of the late Stuart Frost RIP .Seeing the same terriers again and again in different classes is annoying but part and parcel. 5 Quote Link to post
Pick and bar 381
. A show is what it says on the label!! Having judged loads over the years, you can only judge to the breed standard as you interoperate it! You cannot tell if its a good un at the end of the lead!unless you know the man. What's a great? To a chap who throws his heart and soul into it but only gets 3 digs a year is totally different to those lucky busy men that get that every day. You pay yr 2quid and expect yr hero's tobe examined and judged against the next dog, by abiding to a standard everone SHOULD get fair treatment. I have never judged by the owner, if his animal pleases you pick it. 2 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Would you openly pick a rosette hunter though in a working terrier show. Quote Link to post

Treehands 1,417
No.... And if all working terrier judges took the same stance they would get bored not winning an f..k off back from whence they came. As for standards , I would only go by my standards to form my opinion it is a working show not kc. 3 Quote Link to post

Glyn..... 5,208
My First ever show was Llangollen 1979 huge event , me and my mate walked there from over the hill, some nice dogs there and as a young teen i was very impressed with all the battle scared terriers pegged out on couples and as stated some damage from that morning and no doubt doubled up (i went digging with a few of those men years later) it was a meeting place a market place, Seen my first "Patterdales" wanted one , been to loads of shows since used to give GH a hand with the fell and moorland for years, even judged some , alway remember the last show i judged a very pissed off owner with a tiny freshly marked up russell playing f**k with me for not placings his worker i did point out to him the class was for over 11 inch terriers and maybe his terrier would do better with a heat lamp and some grub you can't judge a terriers working ability in a show, hated those stupid working class or best knocked up dog pointless a show is a meeting place a market place , maybe not on the day as i hate seeing pups for sale at them, but somewhere you can find out about up coming litters all the rest is just ego's and little clicks slagging off each other 6 Quote Link to post

Shows can turn usually decent people into liars, LOL. I judged a game fair in the North one time and put a border terrier first which was handled by a girl, but I knew there was a good chance it had seen some work. As we were waiting for the lurchers to finish to pick the champion the boyfriend of the borders owner came over to me and asked me did I know anything about the woman who owned the champion lurcher ? I said NO. He then went on to tell me that the lurchers owner was anti and had reported lads for digging in the past. I ,of course, believed him, LOL. When picking the champion I put the foot down and demanded the terrier win, the lurcher judge wanted the lurcher. A 3rd judge was brought in and he also picked the lurcher, so the lurcher won. I told the two judges they should be ashamed of themselves. LOL, I later found out the lurcher owner was not anti. 3 Quote Link to post
