Spring Or Pcp

Recommended Posts

Spring rifle. A good one. A cheap thing will not teach you anything. A PCP will not teach you anything much above point and shoot.

WEIHRAUCH or AIR ARMS are the makers to look at for spring rifloes that are beautiful to shoot and will make a shooter out of you.

Suppose years ago us oldies only had one choice..the springer. Had the same decision to make myself recently after getting back into the scene after quite a few year's away from it.. boy things have changed and the choice is mind blowing. Decided on a pcp this time around. Got some great memories with the webley hawk, excel and eclipse springers though.. think a springer could be on the cards also..

Would agree that a springer is best for a beginner, when you're at the point of getting one ask again for which, that will be a three page thread alone! Would like to add though any level of experience would appreciate one, most own both types and some only one but we all kind of want one in our cupboard

It really is a question of how seriously do you want to take up shooting an air rifle as a sport. Knowing what I know by sheer experience, I thank God for growing up on spring rifles and seeing the continued developements of the springer that have taken place in my lifetime so far.

A superb quality spring rifle is a joyful thing to own. It really is. The rewards of hitting a rabbit through the head at 40-60 metres and further yet,

is something you need to experience for yourselves. The difference with doing it with a spring rifle is controlling the recoil to a fine managed hold and control of your breathing and pulse in a hold that is gentle and relaxed with nothing stressed or tensed up.(

Read my article SPRING AIR RIFLE SHOOTING pinned in the technical section of this forum)

If you develope as a proficient marksman with a spring rifle, there is nothing you cannot shoot with incredible accuracy. Providing of course, that the rifle is up to the task of shooting with absolute precision accuracy.

Apply it to a PCP and you will reap the full benefits of recoiless shooting accuracy with a lighter more forgiving rifle. At least, you will have the enviable choice of being able to take your pick of what's on offer and shoot it with a better appreciation of what it has to offer in terms of accuracy and handling.

It doesn't, unfortunately work the other way around. Starting with a PCP will not help you become a knowledgeable marksman with an all round grasp of the skills of marksmanship. Being recoiless it will offer nothing to give you a sense of controlling influence on the way the rifle performs in the aim, hold and shot release.

This is why so many PCP shooters either come back to their beloved spring rifles. Or, they pick up a spring rifle and discover just how little they actually know with regard to feel, hold, pressure-sensitivity and trigger control.

Springers of the quality of Weihrauch, Air Arms and LGV are rifles most of us will keep returning to and keep in our cabinets to take out and reconnect with an innate skill of shooting that can honestly trace itself back to the skills required to shoot a longbow.

PCPs are a disconnect from that fine tradition. And that's a shame really.

All shooters who love their sport as much as we do, deserve the great rewards of a lifetime of skills won by shooting and practicing with an ever-developing series of spring rifles AND PCP rifles together. These are not privileges of a few elites. Everyone can enjoy shooting to the levels of a preciaion marksman.

Both rifle types are every bit as good and as accurate as eachother. They both display advantages and disadvantages to eachother and both are worth the journey of exploration and learning from them. Never limit yourself and your experiences to just one facet of the sport.

All the best gentlemen for whatever you shoot and whatever you choose to shoot with.
