walshie 2,804
I'm quite tempted to chip my engine, as they claim to increase horsepower AND mpg. Sounds too good to be true to me. Do they work or are they a gimmick?
slip lead 862
You can buy chips for about £100, but for high performance it's best to go on a rolling road, some have boost dials so you can turn it up or down from inside the motor. Not a good idea IF still under warranty.
smithie 2,443
how many miles extra would you have to do to gain back the cost of the chip?
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
I've got a 1.7dti astra van which I had remapped a couple of months ago. Used to drive nice, not very quick but not terribly sluggish.. Now it drives like a bag of shite.. Two huge flat spots in the rev range, it is certainly faster and pulls a bit better, then you hit the flat spot, feels like the engine cuts out.. Took it back to the garage that remapped it and they said there must be a problem with the motor and the remap has exaggerated the problem.. I don't know but I wish I hadn't bothered now.. If you want a faster or more economical motor buy a faster or more economical motor would be my advice.. If you want it to be a bit faster you will probably drive it a bit faster once it's done, more stress on everything from the clutch and gearbox to the brakes and tyres? I'm not a mechanic just my thoughts..
walshie 2,804
I doubt I'll go for it. I just wondered how it could improve power and mpg. No free lunches in this world.

walshie 2,804
It's not that bad on diesel as it is. I think I'll save the £400.
BITCH 135
Made a big differance to my defender td5. But I had egr blanked off and bypassed the cat with straight through pipe!! Goes well, sounds great and returns about 35ish mpg.

Had a chipped land rover freelander and it was awesome. More power, more mpg if it was for not for windows coming off runners ect I would still have it.

Goes well, sounds great and returns about 35ish mpg. had exact same on my dico td5. Runs sweet as a nut, alot more power and mpg improvement. 250 quid. Worth it but depends on your engine. Some dont take too well to it.
Rabid 1,936
I had a diesel Range Rover, it made a huge difference to power, and it upped my mpg by about 6mpg, I didn't buy it, it came fitted, but when I had injector pump problems I took it off just in case, aft fixing the pump I refitted it after a few months a noticed the difference, yes, I would have one again, but I would research the motor and chip first as I have heard not all of them give good results
dytkos 17,784
I toyed with the idea of chipping my X Trail but was told some cars clutches and/or dual mass flywheels? Can't handle the extra power. Cheers, D.
callum2009 0
Had a few cars re mapped now. A disco td5 which was fine and went like stink. Howver the golf i own is on the 3rd turbo since the re map.
Gaz_1989 9,539
What motor you got walshie? MPG is increased because in theory you don't have to rev the engine as high as before to cover the same distance in the same time - because it is now more powerful. If that makes sense? But you tend to drive it harder, because it drives better, and therefore mpg is reduced.
rob284 1,682
Dont buy a chip box, theyre usually poor build and can dmg your engine. Remap is much safer and is suited to your engine
