NEWKID 27,047
It's been nothing but wet for weeks and the ferreting aint fun when it's pissing down. The break in the weather was forecast for this morning and for once they were right, our 8-30 meet in the sainsburys car park was under an early morning sun, the 10 minute run to the farm and the sun was still out, bonus we would at least be dry! This is a bit of Sam's permission and we had our photographer along for company too!! lol Sean brought his old Border Rudi and the young border pup Reggie, each trip this pup settles more and more, marking well now. I brought my 3 as usual. Reggie Martha Bella we had a little look out on Wednesday night on this bit, and the fields which looked to be favourite were around the edge of the barns and farm yard, the plan was to hit a big hedge at the bottom of the sheep paddock. As we arrived a rabbit dropped into a smallish hedge which banked up to the barns, we saw a few go in here in the night so with the dogs marking all over the bank and a load more holes than expected on the open top we decided to try and grab a couple out of here before moving onto the big hedge. We wrapped the top with a long net to stop anything hitting the barns, but only put a few stops to the field side of the hedge anything that hit the fields were for the dogs to run... hopefully the pup would get a run or 2. In went a good few ferrets and we waited, after 10 mins or so they started to bolt, most headed for the barn and Sam was kept busy as rabbits hit the long net, most stuck well but as we didn't have Geth with us Sam took over the catch and release scheme!! lol. The face of success Fergie had a moment of glory when a rabbit too k a gamble on running the field but didn't get far before she picked it up well... and went on a victory lap with it in her mouth...lol.. we'll get there.. Then came the catch of the day, again the rabbit tried to run the field, Fergie again ran it well, just as she was about to strike up popped the 13 year old border Rudi , with a perfect strike lol... you don't get old without getting wise lol.. This was really enjoyable ferreting session, ferrets and dogs were working well and not much was being missed. We finished the bank on 13. after expectin 3 or 4 out of it it was real bonus. It was decided to have a mooch about for the next hour or so, drop in where the dogs mark, my terrier was on good form, straight away marking a pile of tyres and pushing a rabbit out that shot through the yard and away. Next she was marking on the back of a bramble patch amongst a load of timber, we chucked a few stop nets about and ran a ferret through, one bolted right into Bella's mouth, she's a knack of positioning herself well, but aint called crocodile jaws for nothing, this one was ferret food. That was it pick up and move on, another solid mark resulted in 2 bolts, 1 caught and 1 running the field... the opposite side of the running dogs (sods law)... That was about that, the dogs were marking well but everything was big now, start of the day hedges, it was only 12-30 but these hedges needed a full day at them. we had a walk around another hedge one for another day. As always we had a laugh plus a few rabbits and for a change this year the sun stayed out all day.. 17 Quote Link to post
