The Lurchers Of Yesteryear Were They As Good As Made Out In Comparison To Today's Modern Running Dog

If i wanted a decent and honest bred lurcher in the early ,s it was easy enough to find one,now its far more difficult to source the same.There was plenty of chancers and ego,s about then and the dross they peddled.

With the advent of the Internet this state of affairs is far more prevalent,its unbelievable the nuggets about now that are in the hunting game and care little for hunting,the same ego,s and chancers have a less hunting educated and more easily duped audience,because of the Internet,the dross bred now soon finds an home,years ago this would never have happened,to the same degree.

In reality the majority of modern bred lurchers are a pale shadow of many a mutt bred only a few decades ago,apart from the Saluki hybrids perhaps.

You only need to see the price tag of the average litter now to see the reason behind the breeding,not all.Breeding a litter and wanting them to go to hunting kennels,gratis,was commonplace years ago,its far less frequent now.There is far less honesty in hunting now and the dogs that thrive with that type of ownership,again it was far from Nirvana years ago,but we were closer to it then.

Sounds like the smell of teen spirit is long gone for you aswell then eh Morton

 

Those halcyon days of youthful exuberance and the less restrictive hunting lifestyle afforded then are a distant memory,ive nothing but admiration for the genuine youngsters about now that still ply their hunting trade in the political climate now,nearly tripped over my Zimmer frame with the tears in my eyes.

The lurchers of yesteryear were they as good as some people make out? My thoughts are if they were as good as made out were are they today why did the people who ran them not breed on an keep sound stock for them selfs an keep lines going to this day instead of buying a new dog in of unknown quality when a new runner is needed or was it a case of there was less people out hunting with dogs at that time less housing so more land also the old chaps moaning were a lot younger without family commitments an could get out more to do abit a lot more often

The coldest winters ive known were 73,76 and 77 when i had the pleasure of living in a trench for 4 days,that i dug myself,bloody army training.The facts of life are the summers were possibly hot at that time also.It was also easy enough to source a decent mutt then that did not need a camera to make its name ,has Brian bought you a new phone yet?. ,

all these super dogs you here about from years ago get better as the years pass,its like fishermen telliig you the size of the fish they caught.

I could possibly pick up one of these modern "super dogs" then have to load a shotgun to make the best of it,i don,t give a monkeys about reputations,breeding lineage or ego,s,something more in keeping with the modern lurcher and its ownership.The reality of life from my viewpoint,based on nothing but an admiration for any lurcher that was befitting of the name,the best lurchers about now would be on a par with anything bred earlier,or earlier,or earlier,they are far less common now,fact.

It is easy to say,.."back in my day",..etc, etc...

 

BUT,...facts are,...things were different.....

I can honestly say that in my opinion A lurcher is what you make of it ,In the early 80s I more or less lived on the mountain ,I worked the dogs 7 days a week, digging on the weekend and lamping all over the country 2 or 3 times a week often going straight to work after a night in Oxford. The dogs I had in those days were pretty special because of good breeding and the amount of work they saw, I know times have changed and rabbits are definitely dwindling in a lot of areas but I just cant see how we can compare dogs from then and now ...maybe I`m a bit slow

Imo on average they were better years back... Not many people owned them unless they had a job for them same can be said about ferrets as well... But the very best dogs today are far superior to them old dogs, don't let bag sizes fool you either not as many lamps about back then and less men traveled for sport... I've seen modern dogs stop game the legends of yesteryear would never of caught. Just look at hare dogs how many back in the 70s and 80s could stop 4s or 5s ?
