shepp 2,285
The number one problem in this country is the cost of housing. Too much of people's money goes into rent or mortgage, this is why some many couples have to both work to raise a family. The only way to solve the problem is to cut immigration and to heavily tax second properties, houses should not be used as source of income. Spare cash should be invested in business, which would help the economy. I think too many people in authority have property portfolios or are directors with building companies for things to change.

I agree we should cut immigration.........but do you really think that would devalue a 3 bed semi in leafy Surrey?? I used to live in the smallest 1 bed house you can get in the uk, a quarter house......it was about the same size as my living room now haha.....it still cost me £115k & there was barely any immigrants about, no housing shortage........just a very desirable area of North Essex...... Half of Essex is populated with East End 'white flight', so more English people displaced from London, giving more demand to the limited supply of houses in Essex. Much like all the other counties surrounding London.
horsedrawn 38
Fao shepp Totally agree with you regarding house prices/rent 23 year old couple with 2 kids who rented house of the ex. Both on benefits him suffering from attention deficit disorder but managed to pass his driving test!!!!!! Told me if he was to get a job he would need £500 take home per week. Not blaming them the systems fault, but we need affordable housing be it rental or to buy, as it stands that couple will possibly be on benefits for a long time cos there's no incentive to get jobs what is their quality of life their future.but we are governed my idiots both left and right who have never lived in the real world.
terryd 8,582
How people afford some of these rent prices I don't know they are astronomical. Any thing over 90 quid a week just seems wrong lol Some folks rent for over a grand a month how the hell is that possible Bring back the old days. granddad parked up in a lay bye we got up the next morning he said this looks lovely spot. Knocked on the guys door and bought the 4 acres and a beautiful mobile home for 4 grand job done

Yeh & in a lot cases you've got local white flight now......fleeing chavy white plastic cockneys overrunning their once quiet little towns haha fact! You are right to a degree......but Londoners have always been moving to clacton, Southend etc etc. The southeast & London has always seen a lot of economic movement of our own population, due to more jobs & opportunity's, that's one of many reasons why property prices are so hight.....& don't forget white gentrification of many parts of London, pushing property prices through the roof, so locals can't afford them.......it's too simplistic just to blame immigration, it's only one factor..... It's great to hear people outside of economics / politics forums talking about this. Interest rates being forced down and held at a 300 year low since March 2009 is also something to think about. Low interest has encouraged people to get dangerously large mortgages and bid ever higher prices for houses. How many people will be unable to make mortgage payments if / when mortgage rates return to the historic average of around 7.5% ??
unlacedgecko 1,466
The only way to solve the problem is to cut immigration and to heavily tax second properties, houses should not be used as source of income. I worked hard and bought houses to rent out. This is a more secure form of investment than putting into someone else's business. I haven't pissed my money up the wall or spent it on high living/holidays abroad. Why should I be penalised for this?
horsedrawn 38
Orwell real name was Eric Blair in my head sometimes think this was why new labour wanted to dumb down education system with degrees in coronation St. Think everyone should read Animal Farm and 1984. All animals are equal but some are more equal than others. 2+2 is whatever big brother wants it to be. I've got a fare chunk of cash in a pension but can't have it till 55 and then only half plus I'll get taxed and now conservatives thinking about doing away with tax relief on pension. Buy to let put your money in bricks and mortar but we will change the rules and tax you at 40%. Is this fergie time gone mad? Maybe we should all sign on the dole cos whoever is in don't look after working people
The one 8,503
Your caught in the trap you get married have kids work your nuts off to pay your mortgage and raise your kids hoping to live the good life in your twilight years if your health allows it then you end up stuck babysitting the grandkids or dying
