Has anybody on here ever had a dogs hip replaced? Im wanting to get one of my bitchs done. For the last couple years shes been bothered with her hips badly and even though the pain killers keep her going i dont see it as a long term thing. She owes me nothing so even though i really cant afford it i dont want to watch her suffer for the rest of her days.

How long does the recovery process take?

And a rough price if anybody has an idea?

I imagine its going to be plus of a £1000 but if it does the job it will be cheaper than pumping her full of pain killers for the next however many years she has left.

Fecking horrible seeing them suffer with their joints as they get older  hip replacement isn't something I've ever had experience with myself but I've heard of success stories on forums etc in the past. I reckon you could be looking at closer to £10,000 than £1000 for the op though :icon_eek:

Its not her full hips its just on her near side its the ball joint its square instead of round. ive heard about how well the treatment can go so hopefully i can get a payment plan set up or get a loan if worst comes and i cant get enough money i will sell my quad bike and that should help a long way towards it.

Depends on the op really - some vets will remove the ball part of the bone, leaving the rounded off end of the bone to sit inside the joint - can reduce the pain considerably, but has its own issues, as the bone remaining isn't designed to be a surface for the joint to move on. In an elderly dog, it can be a good enough fix that it is far better than what the dog had before, but isn't designed to last that long, or be a *replacement* - more like those funny skinny spare tyres that can only do 40 MPH and only get you to the nearest garage for a proper replacement. If the dog is only going to wombling around for the rest of their natural life, it can be a just fine. An actual replacement will remove the ball part, and put a synthetic replacement in, which is designed to work like a normal hip - same movement, no pain - much more expensive, but allows the dog full use of the joint as it was before the hip issues started. Plusses and minuses on both counts really. If the single hip problem is the only thing making the dog *old* then a replacement hip sounds better. If the dog is elderly all over, and the hip is just the worst of the issues, perhaps better pain control (there are lots of alternatives ) is more the way forward ?

Fair play pal you're obviously really dedicated to her, good to see  sure most vets would do a payment plan with a decent sum paid upfront.

That's some top advice from LaraCroft above, whatever route you decide to go down I wish you many more happy years with your mutt.

I feel for you. I had a pet dog which had displasia. I went to Michigan State University Veterinary school (the best place over here) to see what they thought about replacement. They were against it and pointed out that the hip could easily be damaged by a dogs running around and doing dog things. That with the pain of surgery, recovery time and cost made it a poor decision they thought.

Another thing I looked at was Vet Stem therapy. It was a few thousand dollars over here. This is a link to something you can read.

In the end I opted for what the surgeon recommended. Tramadol, Rimadyl, and Glusousamine-Chondrotin. The dog lasted maybe seven years and developed a bleeding tumor on her liver.

Good luck what ever you decide.
