Game Larder Conversion

I had this small outbuilding which i'd earmarked as a larder / cutting room since moving into my house over 5 years ago and finally got round to doing something about it towards the end of last year. I seem to be doing more and more deer for family and friends and as my sheep worked out so well it'll probably become a more regular event... as well as a hopefully my own pig at some point so it was about time I upped my hygiene from the previous make-do effort.

 

The room already had an electric hook up (the previous owners fire hazard) and water but also a horrible asbestos roof, rotten wall-plate, single glazed windows and an interconnecting wall which all had to come out first. Grinding the bolts off the asbestos roof and removing the sheets was a personal low point! I was replacing it with big 6 cement fibre sheets to avoid the condensation you get with tin and, being a bit of a skip-rat, managed to scrounge some surplus industrial shelving braces from the local gunshops store room. These proved to be a stroke of luck as they were exactly the right length to bolt down onto the new wall plate help brace and fix the roof sheets and I could also run some threaded bar through it for a suspended meat rail bar that is so sturdy you could do chin-ups off it.

 

 

Once the roof was on, which my mate Tim helped me out with, I could re-size the areas for the new window in and then re-do the electrics adding the sockets where I wanted them. Next was to batten and clad the walls and ceiling in OSB and level the floor before getting the hygienic clad (parlour board) on top of the OSB and getting the ceiling clad up.

 

 

 

Came VERY close on the dimensions for the chiller and chest freezer. Nothing to spare at all on the chiller height and about a rizla papers worth between the chiller, freezrrr and wall - Precision engineering! There are still some finishing touches needed round the windows etc which i'll probably leave for another 5 years but at least but its now serviceable now.

Very nice job pal, and some good kit, will make a perfect set up, looking at doing something my self soon from one of my buildings, what is the parlour board ? And where did you source the chiller, I desperately need one of them.

It will take longer to do that than I thought it would when I started! Costs spiralled a bit when I realised you can't do a good job using cheep materials.

The parlour board is just a cheeper alternative to altro white rock cladding, you can get it in 8x4 sheets from mole valley farmers - I used the connector strips and corner moulds as well but you don't have to, especially if your room is flat and square.

 

The chiller was a fluke on ebay after looking for ages and ages. Its a 1mx1m modula one but I've got the number of a bloke that refurnishes and converts large commercial fridges for the purpose (and will deliver) if you want it.

Thanks mate - the wipe clean surfaces make a huge difference; also makes you realise just how dirty different surfaces can get when doing a seemingly insignificant task. Probably explains a few upset stomachs I've had in the past!
