walshie 2,804
Obviously I don't speed when I'm driving, but if I did, I could have been done twice in less than a week locally to me. Each time a car coming the other way has flashed his lights to alert my side of the road of the presence of a detector van further down the road. I understand the speed camera detectors you fit in your car can "see" the laser from the speed camera and warn you of it, surely once the detector has spotted the beam, the camera has spotted you? Do they both only see in straight lines? If so, are they any use on the bendy roads we have? I don't get it,
smithie 2,443
i know it doesnt answer your question but some can get you 1 mile away on a straight road.
kanny 20,611
I think they can pick up the speed cameras or hand held speed guns from quite a distance way before they can get reading on you... but worth bearing in mind the are illegal. They aren't illegal in the UK, YET. My question though is if the van is hiding round a bend, by the time the detector sees the van, the van has seen you, surely? I don't get it, my wife go one in her car (road angel ), they will detect = van, guns, cars, what they do is tell you (if) they been there and if (are) there now. regards the laser beam the angel will pick it up where ever it is, and you got enough time to drop back to legal speed then I t should beep etc lol
Blackbriar 8,569
Observe the speed limit and its not an issue ! It's a limit, not a target !

It's a limit, not a target ! that's what the (road angel) does it make sure you keep to the limit, if you go over it will tell you to slow down to that speed limit you should be doing

Blackbriar 8,569
I've found out how they work. But, having read this, I'm none the wiser ! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LIDAR_speed_gun It does explain why they're so hot on dodgy number plates, though !

Blackbriar 8,569
The fact that the detector is aimed at the number plate means it can't possibly detect you unless there is a clear line of sight.....?
