Somewhereyournot 1,117
How long should I rest my dog up? Has tiny amount of blood under skin where he must of torn but muscle in leg. Quote Link to post
Dame92 387
My dog did it before, but she torn her monkey muscle, 2 seasons ago at the end so she had a lot of rest before I ever ran her again. I still run her now but not hard Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Blood under the skin can also be caused by bruising: like from a knock to the area. This is one of the reasons why so many lurchers suffer from long term scarring to previously torn muscles, because the owners just thought the dog had bashed itself, and what they thought was a bruise was in fact subcutaneous bleeding from a torn muscle. It might help if you say where the injury is exactly, and a photo if you can take one. Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Thumbnail on the tricep, and bruising to the rib bit, just back from armpit. He's not lame at all. Been advised since post by a guy I know with greyhounds to keep on lead for 4 weeks. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Sounds like a little tear in the monkey muscle: tricep. Good advice you've been given. Massage daily gently to help disperse blood and increase chances of correct healing. 1 Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Is it a big injury to have ? As in will it keep repeating ? I have rubbed it twice a day 5 minutes a time and kept a jacket on him too so is always warm. Iv applied arnica cream to bruised areas too. Hopefully he will come right Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,327
Never had a lurcher with a monkey muscle injury but ive had it loads when i trained Greyhounds, its unlikely to repeat the same problem unless you run the dog to soon..with Grey's we gave 7-8 weeks rest to make sure they were fully healed.. Somewhereyournot 1,117
Thanks for replies. He's a fast dog , and gives his all , for his size he turns sharp as hell and this weather can't of helped think all that combined caused it. Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
I was told I can still walking him normal just on the lead, is this true? Or proper strict rest 1 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,327
Walking on the lead is grand he just dont want to be chasing anything or free running if he charges about the place bud ? 2 Quote Link to post
logan 447
My bitch tore her monkey muscle when she was 3 years old now she is 5 after taken her to the bone man and 7 weeks off she was back to normal and she gets some serious amounts of running . 1 Quote Link to post

This is one good reason to inject a bit of desert dawg into a line, that rolling gait could'nt do a monkey muscle if it wanted to Quote Link to post
captainpugwash 2
Get yourself some oil based liniment oil (trainers choice muscle rub) and massage it in a couple times daily. Give him 8 weeks lead walking. Ultra sound would be an advantage if u can or portamag. U have done right to rub witch hazel and arnica gel in to get rid of any swelling on the muscle. I hope this helps Quote Link to post
roybo 2,873
My bitch tore her thigh a few year back and this was the effect she was sore for a fair while....done it in the January ,rested rest of season ,1st time out next season she dislocated her toe. Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
That looks bad. My dogs bruise is nothing like that , but is darker. The bit on the tricep can be covered by my index finger tip. And the bit on the rib can be covered by 2-3 finger tip lol Quote Link to post
