terryd 8,660
This fella of mine though I think his great and wouldn't swap him for any thing and his doing grand job so far would he put more rabbits in the bag than this little chap i used to have that would be a big no simply because the terrier could get in any place and follow the rabbit any where. But then I couldn't take him lamping 1 Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,089
if you want a good ferreting dog you can't rule out any gundog, terrier, collie and obviously lurchers in all there shapes or any dog really. The real good ones can come in any shape. That leads on to the next question what makes a good ferreting dog and that will depend on what each person expects. For me putting them to ground and marking any thing else is a bonus a silent mark don't like a dog digging at burrows 2 Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,347
If ferreting only a whippet or whippet saturated lurcher is perfect. 1 Quote Link to post
forest 137
The bedlington lurcher or first cross bedlington whippet or grayhound has to be the best. 2 Quote Link to post
fluff 409
yet to see a top class bedie greyhound or whippet beddie , we done rabbiting trails never saw a beddie any were near them ,,saw alot of whippet and terrier crosses hard mouthed , not great fetchers and to much hunting and not steady , you need a steady dog soft mouthed, fast of the mark durable , and doesnt blast about like a headless chicken , al the years we had rabbiting trails never saw a terrier cross win fechall ,,was always collie grew type of lurchers , dave slieghts old strain , etc the kelpie grew type , they were very good obedient dogs still got one mini a gem of a dog , thats what i would look for ,abterrier cross would be good if they were easly handled easy to train to a good standard and soft mouthed 1 Quote Link to post
frankel 2,123
I think any cross brought up with ferrets and working holes will be handy. My mate uses his border terrier to work the nets and mark holes. When we go we generally just bolt so I like a good marker, that good jumper and steady around the holes with no slip also good retriever and soft mouthed. Phil Lloyd 10,738
Nice pictures fellahs... Personaly,..because I only work hedgerows and bramble patches, spinneys, ditches, etc...I like to use smaller types with a preference towards Greyhound/Whippet and Sheepdog blood...I've had all sorts of ferreting dogs,.most have done the job,.no real problems with any of them. However, I find that some handle the difficulties far better than others. Some individuals cannot handle, mentally and physically,..the unavoidable frustration, connected with the fast and furious, 'in and out' close combat work, that thick blackthorn ditches so often bring. My game is not a productive one I will admit,.but,.it pays the rent and suppliments my meagre savings.. Edited January 10, 2016 by Phil Lloyd 10 Quote Link to post

Qbgrey 4,165
DSC01045.JPGdogs waiting for a bolt, most breeds will mark, hold rabbits.atb dc ☺That's were every ones different I'd never put a ferreting dog on sit ,a dog should be free to roam the sett, listening and then be in right place to catch or hold Edited January 10, 2016 by Qbgrey 4 Quote Link to post
