English Bull And Their Crosses Thread.

Trace those dogs back to the late 1800s and what were they called? Bull terriers or pit bull terriers. There's plenty of historical documents (newspaper ads, old game dog publications, personal records of breeders) dating from that time that called the dogs used for dog fighting bull terriers

Why the name if there's no terrier blood?

there is/was a lane on Burnley rd from Bacup out towards Burnley called pit bull lane or something very similar. Was told it's a very old name. When I enquired about the name to my friends dad and he explained... It was the first time I ever heard about the dog/baiting pits of yesteryear, I was about six or so ?

So I'm guessing that the name pit bull isn't an American invention ;)

Of course it isn't, they were already being called pit bull terriers when they were first imported to America, there's newspaper ads etc that show that.

I bet that lane has been renamed now...

Not at all, the Yanks created the name in 1898. Dogmen still called them what they wanted after it's recognition.

There was either a 'chorley' or a 'clitheroe' bull terrier, similar to 'Staffordshire' but they all fell by eventually

Everyone knows our bull terriers for the pit created the American version. But nowadays the American version is far superior

They are the same version, the Americans preserved it and likely improved it though through selection....

Dug to loads of bullx's of every % from the mid 70s to early 80s as it was all that was available about me at the time. They were mainly staffxrussell with the odd exception on ebxrussell. Some were very hard[stupid hard] and more were very steady diging dogs.I had up until a couple of year back a pattxbull that was dug to a lot over 6 seasons and never let us down, bit over anxious for his own good and finished up with only a couple of teeth left at 7 year old, gave to to a mate that just wanted something to bush with or bolt the odd fox for his running dogs as i would not use him again, would not be fair on the dog the way he worked.Probably will never keep or work a bull russell type again as the stuff i have now dies what i want but they were grand dogs to work when we were younger.
