toxo 160
Think I've narrowed it down to .17hmr. Won't be shooting at anything 200yds away. Availability is still a problem though. Just called my nearest RFD (45mins away) and he doesn't have any cept a box of 50. Can't get them. Has thousands on back order. Probably why there are bout 248 .17hmrs on guntrader from about £195. charlie caller 3,654
I could head shoot bunnies out to 200 yards and beyond with monotonous regularity with my .22 hornet, using Sierra 45 grain varminter bullets, if cost is not a major factor, there is no need to re-load the .22 hornet if yours will shoot the excellent Hornady 35 grain vmax (and most seem to) but I am afraid most other factory ammo is rather pedestrian in .22 hornet, owing to the rather low charge used to avoid blowing the chambers on the very old hornets still in use, so if a different make/weight of bullet is required, re-loading is a must, however if its just been used for bunnies, and your rifle will shoot them, the Prvi Partisan .22 hornet rounds are cheap as dirt, the chap who bought my hornet uses them to good effect on foxes, but I cant help feeling that he would be astounded by the accuracy of the Sierra's if he took the time to re-load. A quick look at Guntrader shows 1172 .22lr, 448 .308 and 702 .243 for sale today as well. Good luck with whatever you end up with, I have a lot of calibres including the HMR, and I find it definitely has a place for me. Quote Link to post

Good luck with whatever you end up with, I have a lot of calibres including the HMR, and I find it definitely has a place for me. Will probably end up loving it. Just wanted to look at alternatives first. If Charlies prices are do-able, I'll keep an eye on the hornet for later. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
No fair Deker. .17hmr has only been around for five minutes. I believe it was 2002, so just makes 14 years now! Its a very popular/useful calibre, despite its issues! Quote Link to post
IanB 0
I have a .22 hornet and a .17 HMR , to be honest I thought the hornet would be my go to round for the odd fox and then rabbits, but the number of rabbits I'm shooting, it becomes a pain reloading for the hornet, I can get through a lot of rounds. The HMR comes into its own with shooting big bags of rabbits with night vision for me were range is difficult to judge, its so easy to just grab a few boxes of HMR rounds that cost £12 for 50 than reload 150 .22 hornet rounds, which becomes a right time consuming exercise. If I'm going round a place that doesn't hold a massive amount of rabbits, I'll take the .22 hornet. If i'm going rabbit shooting, around farms were its difficult to get within yards of them, I'll take the HMR which is now fitted with an Apex XD75 and its deadly truth be told. What I would say if your going for a HMR avoid the browning T-Bolt the trigger is really bad on them, and will cause accuracy issues, grab yourself a low maintenance CZ synthetic if your more into shooting your rifle than what it looks like and fit a trigger kit that transforms the weight of pull and improves the trigger no end, for the money there brilliant. HMR would be my choice out of the lot for rabbits out to 150yards. Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Ian did your HMR not blow up with a stuck round in the chamber? Is this not a consideration? If every round was checked for split necks can this be avoided? Also what happened to the rifle? Did the ammo manufacturer replace the rifle? Cheers.. Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Yes mate, I was using blue tips and one didn't ignite correctly and got stuck in the barrel without me noticing, blew the stock apart, Edgar brothers repaired the rifle, replacing what they needed too and also replaced the blue tips I had. I'm always very cautious now with every shot, if there's. Crack it fine, if it's a pffft then I check the barrel Regardless of this dodgy situation there still the best tool for me when shooting a lot of rabbits out to 150yds, and there ideal for doing this with night vision. To be honest it's all I use at this stage In the season. Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
I've been thinking about chopping my .22 in for one too.. I find the .22 lacking a bit for what I want out of it.. I've considered both hornets but owning a .223 it seems pointless in having one.. I thought about selling my fox gun (.223) and rabbit gun (.22lr) and buying a hornet to replace both.. Or keeping the .223 for foxes and getting the HMR for rabbits. The hornet would work out ok for me personally I suspect because I would only be shooting 20/30 rabbits once a week... I'm sure many have thought about the same thing.. But all things considered out foxing I fear I would be under gunned with a hornet and over gunned on the rabbits! The .223 and HMR just sound perfect for each task.. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Not used one myself Deerhound, but it seems reasonable against fox. This is the .17 under live prey test at quite some distance: It's going to be a definite downgrade from a .223 with around 1/2 the energy, but if it does the job at the ranges you want and serves as a duel purpose gun, then i don't see an issue.
