THE GENERAL 1,982
I usually start piking when the frosts come.....obviously still to dust the gear of this year and it may not even happen! Im off barbeling tomorrow, weather forecast has given 11degrees! Anyone else in similar situation or started piking regardless? I'm the same first few hard frosts and then it's time. Haven't had the rods out yet since fishing for the eel in the summer. Quote Link to post

ryaldinhio 4,562
Get your spinners and plugs out lads. I used to love fishing with plugs and spinners, caught and lost some big fish with the method....BUT for some reason now I get bored with it very quickly??? Dont know why, can't put my finger on it. If the weather stays like this I wont be doing any piking this year. Fingers crossed for a freeze and a decent snow fall. For me Piking now is when its freezing cold and fishing lives(if can catch em) or deads amd keep moving. There is no feeling like that when float fishing a deadbait amd the float sat there still suddenly twitches, bobs and slides away. The first thought everytime is....this is a monster! Its just something about dead bait fishing. My regular fishing partner thinks Im mad because summer pike fight harder and all that but for me winter is pike time. 4 Quote Link to post

No don't use traps did in the past when we had a boat. A friends family are commercial eel fishermen so never any shortage of them if I want some for the pan. 1 Quote Link to post

I've seen a few 3lbers taken out of lakes not far from me but no 4lb+ lads fishing late in the evening on the bottom for trout caught them but none that size from the Lough or the mouth of the river leading to the Lough. The eel are definitely not as big as they used to be, getting smaller as the years go by. Edited December 31, 2015 by THE GENERAL Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,152
My cousin traps the eels on our river once the salmon season finishes, makes good money out of smoked eels, real delicacy and sought after in all the fancy restaurants round here. The smoking house he uses is 100 odd years old, I've had a couple of packets off him and they are lovely, really delicate flesh and not over smoked, lovely flavour. Better than smoked salmon or trout for me. 1 Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,152
Here's a link to his website, he's done since a kid with my uncle before him, they've always worked the river. http://smokedfish.yolasite.com/products.php 1 Quote Link to post
