So quick question how many years do you work your dogs until you say retirement is needed obviously depending on injury and when we you say a dog is in its prime

One of my dogs is 10 years old and is still nailing the bunnies. pulls fur out of those that bite back, let the dog tell you when it wants to retire, A working dog gets a better deal than any handbag or household pooch. As for being in its prime mine have varied smaller whippety types can hit the mark in their second season, larger dogs take longer.If you have had the dog from a pup and it has served you well then give it the loyalty that it has given you and let it enjoy its retirement .its a small price to pay.

How do your dogs fair in retirement? I've never had hunting dogs but often wondered how they are after years of adrenaline while hunting to going to chilling out ?

 

Do you have to provide some other form of adrenaline for then it is it gybthevtibe they retire that will for adrenaline has gone

Just coz a dog is retired worker do t mean you carnt get it out for a mooch or a run down the beach but just non of them long night lamping or hard days coursing etc

be tween 3 and 6 years old for its prime. if its had no ban ingerys it should still do a good job for you at 10 years old and more but will obvesly be slowing down a bit

merry christmas lads,i am not a chop and change man with my dogs,there with me from pups till they retire or die of old age,i like a lot of other lads,work them hard and regullary from maturity till they are about 8yrs of age,which with luck and good care most of my lurchers make,from about 8yrs i tend to still work them but ease there workload to suit there abilities.i always tend to look for a pup to train up when they approach this age, my oldest boy passed away only recently still doing abit of ferreting at12yrs old,the oldest lurcher that i had that was still wanted to keep going was14 yrs,like the old saying theres still life in the old dogs yet,hoping you all have agood, safe and injury free year,and enjoy your dogs young and old . atb.

As long as the dog is fit and active it will go for at least 10yrs plus,when you retire them if you give them the house to do it in they will enjoy the comfort and warmth especially this time of year.if you notice a working dog that is kept fit doesn't go as grey as quick as a pet dog.

I should of explained better,pet dogs that do nothing and have a nice chilling lifestyle goes grey quicker than a dog out grafting until a old age.
