gnasher16 30,594 Posted December 24, 2015 Report Share Posted December 24, 2015 The only answer i can give Gnash is maybe.. Swimming is such a difficult sport for a kid to get to any decent level in. The dedication to training, to get to good pools for coached sessions is very difficult for many. At my best i was in the pool twice daily four to five days a week, before and after school, with gym sessions on the others. There was no time to do anything else and although i became mates with the people i swam with, we were worlds apart outside swimming. Even the most gifted of kids can fall by the wayside because they do not have the family dedication behind them these days but it was the 70's and swimming was a far cry from what it is today. It's not like a walk or bus ride to your local ABC to train with your mates. I had that support from my grandad for years but when he struggled my parents were working flat out and shame on me, i seen it all as an excuse to duck all that training at the time! My daughter is turning out a decent little swimmer, she could swim 600 metres age four and two years on is really doing well. She wants to join a club and i'm really happy that she's so keen but down the line, the minute she's had enough i won't be a pushy parent, i know how difficult it can be. Its the sort of sport thats probably more technical than the average sports fan would understand......a bit like sprinting you tend to think a lot of it is natural and apart from physical strength/fitness theres not much to improve on but im sure theres tiny tweaks here and there that make a lot of difference.Its interesting i always had the East End and Liverpool down as similar areas rough docks etc with similar working class and sporting traditions but i cant for the life of me ever remember swimming pools round these parts back then i know we never went with the school infact the only pool i ever remember even talking about was Leyton Baths and thats only because it was a boxing venue ....good luck with the youngster anyway i dont think it matters what sport a kid competes in....just as long as they do. Nail on the head there Gnash... I'd agree the similaritys between the two. There was only one pool for the city team to train in and for me it was a nightmare to get to. The bottom line is that back then my social stature made it almost impossible to keep going. It just shows how sports science has progressed as fighters we would pound the streets every day i remember we would do a regular run along the River Lea down here and the old fireman Terry Marsh would swim it !....he was always a bit of an oddball so nobody took much notice when he used to rant on about how much less stressful on the joints it was then lo and behold years later he was right and all fighters now swim. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Rake aboot 4,936 Posted December 24, 2015 Report Share Posted December 24, 2015 I cycle. Not competing but fast recreational cycling. Looking to do a few sportives this year so am dedicating more time to it. Also just bought a mountain bike as I better get into it before my bones are too brittle lol. Am 50 in a coupla years so better get into properly fit shape as it gets harder to get it back after a winter layoff from cycling. You definitely should do more as you get older, not slow down. Malt 379 Posted December 24, 2015 Report Share Posted December 24, 2015 Played mini rugby as a kid, couldn't do much sport in my teens because of knee trouble, so it was only after I had my cartilages out in my late teens that I could play again. Played youth rugby for a couple of seasons, but started suffering with my knees again in 2000 so I knocked it on the head just as I was about to step up to senior level. neems 2,406 Posted December 24, 2015 Report Share Posted December 24, 2015 I got dragged to football until I was about 8-9 which I hated every minute of,boxed from about 13 then Thai boxing and jujitsu. The only sport I had any talent in is Thai boxing,done well straight from the get-go won a few fights after just a few months training,then fecked my knee sparring,brought the lad down slowly from a clinch so as not to hurt him ,he wrapped my leg then tried to throw me over him and there was a loud popping noise,and that was it. lesson is don't train with f***ing idiots,and if you have to smash f**k out of them,don't play nice. Not that I'm bitter... Some interesting routes you've all taken,I wouldn't even know where to start getting into cycling or swimming competitively. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

If you fancy a bit harder training, there will be loads of Sunday runs and club runs locally who will have different groups going out at different speeds. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
