RossM 8,119
So got a text from joe1888 asking if I could lend a helping hand in a bit permission he has for ferreting. I've not been out since the new baby last week and we agreed that today was as good a time as any. Some may remember my missus sister got a whippet X pup a while back so after clearing it with joe I invited her sisters boyfriend out for his and his pups first experience ferreting. We picked joe up around 7am and drove the 40 minutes to the permission, he had Celt, I had ye auld faithful 11 yr old codie and Ryan had pip. We spent the first 20 or so minutes introducing pip the the ferrets and to be fair she was spot on, if anything a little too enthusiastic to get along and this set the tone for the first few hours after all it was a whole new experience for her. As we made our way up the hills the wind was howling, could hardly hear our conversation and it got me thinking about how hard it would be to hear any action underground, that and how it always affects how the bunnies bolt. First warren was relatively big maybe 40 holes dogs gave a mark so we netted the majority of the holes. Two ferrets in and a longish wait only for a single rabbit to pop out and make a hasty escape into the thick whin bushes. Not the start I was hoping for or the kind I wanted the newbies to experience lol. Onto the next one dogs gave a mark but nothing came out I'm still of the opinion that it was too big for 2 ferrets and they were getting the run around but hey can't catch them all. We then let the dogs check the next few as we continued up the hills and it wasn't till we got to the very top, the peak so to speak that we got very positive marks thank god as I was feeling sorry for Ryan having traipsed all the way up and only seeing one rabbit escape and nothing since, I left joe and Ryan to net the first and I continued along a short distance and netted up another both of us leaving a few unetted just to make it interesting. I headed back across to the others just in time to see a rabbit bolt only to make it past the dogs through a fence and disappear down a warren we had missed, but it wasn't long till we had another bolt and Celt to take hold in the purse net, not too long we had another bolt out an unetted hole only for it to try and re enter the warren and back net itself. The next one didn't even get 2 yards and codie picked it up, and by this time the pup although knackered had perked up and was showing interest. The next rabbit pulled the peg out but was duly held in the net till someone got there. Ferrets resurfaced but we decided to leave nets down and move over to the ones I had netted up, just incase any evaded and hopefully they would back net if they headed that way. Ferrets in and not too long before a rabbit exploded out a hole and down the hill with codie in pursuit..... Closely followed by the pup! Chuffed would be an understatement for Ryan and I both. Another bolt and a netted rabbit then a small dig to another rabbit. We were on 7 with an 8th seen enter a nice wee 3 holer earlier. We dropped a ferret in with no nets and within 5 seconds we had about and Celt picked it up within 10 yards, ferret was still away and it wasn't long before another bolted for the dogs. The final rabbit was a wee half foot dig and pulled out by Codie joe almost had a heart attack as she got close to ferret when she angled herself for a better hold lol. Final amount 10 rabbits a decent amount and a good first time for Ryan and the pup. They'll definitely be back next time. Thanks again for the invite joe good to get codie out to show me what she still has to offer at 11 lol Some pictures....... Sorry a lot of pictures lol Pup meets ferret.... Pup likes ferret lol Spectators Scenery Pup meets rabbit.... Pup like rabbit Ryan being new was on rabbit carry duty.. Thanks for looking. 17 Quote Link to post
