king 11,984
I've suffered from them for as long as I can remember.and the last few weeks I've started to put the miles in walking the mountains in my valley. but my shins hurt so much that I've got to keep stopping and it's getting annoying as my calf's and lungs feel good and I want to keep on walking.ive tried loosening my boot laces which helps a little bit.does anyone else suffer from them and is there a way to deal with them.ie stretching or cold water after walking or deep heat etc. Cheers king. matt1979 766
Stretching will help a little but it's usually inflammation of the muscle lining (fascia) and usually the tib anterior muscle which isn't easy to stretch. Google tibialis anterior stretch for info. Seen a fair bit of it on marches in the military , anti inflammatories will help but the only thing i have seen which seemed to solved it long term was change of footwear or insole. I would invest in a good gel insole from one of these sports shops made to measure or just keep trying different types to start with then invest atb Edited December 13, 2015 by matt1979 Quote Link to post

bunnyboiler 1,054
The only way to get through shin splints is to keep going it could take 1 month it could take 12 depends how severe it is it took me 2 months when I started skipping at the local boxing the local trainer an old boy has said he's seen it a hundred times before and gave everyone the same advice and that was to go through it ? 2 Quote Link to post

paulsmithy83 567
I get em bad if i dont do my exercises. I was told by a marathon runner to use a tennis ball under your foot apply pressure and sort of massage your foot with the tennis ball. As long i do this twice a week i never get em if i dont its like people smashing base ball bats off me shins. No idea why do that to the foot to help the shins but it does work. Loads of vids on youtube aswell about it Quote Link to post

Its well known in marathon runners. They never advises them to push through it ???? Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
Nearly everybody gets them in the army when you first join and used to tabbing long distances in boots carrying weight etc ... There is no miracle cure other than push through ... The more you do the easier it becomes until one day you don't get shin splints anymore........ 4 Quote Link to post
