Connor Delony 0
Just interested if there is many people working this breed or xs ? As there is a few Ibizan X dogs in Australia being used for foxes and havnt really heard about any being used in the uk Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,214
Not somthing we use over here,,,they do open up,,,and to most lads a dog barking whilst running is a big no no... Also there not that quick ,, Really they are a hound,,rather than a pure sight hound like our greyhounds,,,there's loads of film of them on YouTube ,,working in Spain ,,and the Spanish islands,,,and there great at what there bred for,,,working very ruff terrain,,with a lot of cover... 1 Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
Back in the 70's I saw a bitch run on Salisbury Plain, that was bred from a deer/grey to a pharaoh hound. (not an ibizan, I know but similar). She was a nice looking bitch and ran well for a youngster but as Tomo say's, she yapped while running. Quote Link to post
Blackdog92 2,047
Is a ibizian hound the same as a podenco just a diffrent name? Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,214
Yeh pretty much,,,,but podencos do vary a bit....you can get smaller versions,,,about the size of a springer,,,I think podenco means rabbit hunter,,or rabbit dog,,,,mushroom will know Quote Link to post
Blackdog92 2,047
From what ive seen on youtube of the podenco they look to be amazing jumpers it looks like a good days sport with them big packs of them they hunt with. 1 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,214
I would agree,,,I've watched loads of clips on the net,,,and some of the best bits were on lanzerrote,,I think it was,,them dogs were running on hardened lava,,,,and the rabbits were living in the cracks of rock and lava,,,they used muzzled ferrets to get them out to runs the dogs on,,,great footage Quote Link to post
Blackdog92 2,047
A holiday in lanzerrote never really appeled to me but it might if i got chance to tag along with them. ive never heard of a ferret muzzle before but i suppose a locator isnt going to be much use when you cant dig into hardened lava. TOMO 26,214
If I remember correctly ,,,they are only aloud to hunt up on the volcano twice a week,,,must be some local law put in place... Quote Link to post
bendrover 556
Seen a pharo x in crete about 5 years ago . The owner told me more in sign language than speach , he used it for rabbits and pointed to a very rocky hill . Horrible looking thing it was lol Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Back in the seventies two mates had Ibizans x whippet. One was not to bad on the lamp but she could sing for Wales when on a hare, but only the odd yap when on a rabbit. Not the brightest of dogs and pretty slow, looked like a light hound with the Ibizan head, most of her catches were pulled out of the hedges. The litter brother well what can I say except absolute rubbish, I think it only caught two rabbits in it's life. TC Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Would they suit a terrierman ? Connor says they're using them down under on foxes. Would they hunt up, mark and catch quickly if he bolted ? Quote Link to post
Connor Delony 0
I have only seen a pure and x bred hunt and they seemed to be handy. well and truly fast enough to catch a fox, had a pretty handy nose and did voice a little bit but this was only when it was right behind the fox in the patch. Have talked to a couple people that sware by a bit of Ibizan blood in there dogs Quote Link to post
